Dabei ist die Stadt am Embach/Emajogi seit ihrer Gründung auf viele Weisen europäisch vernetzt: Zunächst als Bischofssitz im mittelalterlichen Livland (heute: Estland und Lettland) in die Strukturen der römischen Kirche. Als Hansestadt kontrollierte sie mit Riga und Reval/Tallinn den Handel zwischen Russland und dem übrigen Europa. Und seit der Neugründung der Universität 1802 waren ihre Absolventen weit über die Grenzen des russländischen Kaiserreichs gefragte Experten. Doch blieb Dorpat nicht allein Ausbildungsort der deutschbaltischen Eliten, sondern wurde zu einem Kristallisationspunkt der estnischen Nationalbewegung. Henceforth, no separate bishop shall be appointed in Semgallia, because that region forms a part of the diocese of Riga, for it is not so vast that it could sustain a separate bishopric even if the whole were converted to the faith ."With this decision, the diocese of Selonia (Semgallia) was liquidated in 1251 by Cardinal Legate Guglielmo, Cardinal Bishop Pietro da Collemezzo and Cardinal Priest John of Toledo. The diocese had only been established 33 years earlier, with great hopes of winning the southern shore of the Daugava for the Crusaders.However, after the establishment of the diocese, Selonia was no longer the focus of the Crusaders' attention: instead, Mezhotne, located in the basin of the Lielupe, became the center of Selonia, though the territory was now more commonly referred to as Semgallia. A cathedral was planned to be built at Mezhotne and it was also the seat of the cathedral chapter. By all accounts, it could be assumed that the bishops of Semgallia would become important ecclesiastical princes of Livonia, rulers of a secular and spiritual territory.In this title we investigate why this did not happen and how this diocese was soon liquidated. Seelimaa piiskopkond rajati vaid 33 aastat varem, suure lootusega võita ristisõdijate kätte Väina lõunakallas. Piiskopkonna loomise järgselt ei olnud Seelimaa siiski enam ristisõdijate tähelepanu keskpunkt: selleks oli Lielupe jõgikonnas asuv Mezhotne, millest sai ka Seelimaa ehk nüüd pigem Zemgale piiskopkonnana tuntud oleva territooriumi kese. Sinna planeeriti rajada katedraal ja see oli ka toomkapiitli asukohaks. Kõikide eelduste järgi võis arvata, et Zemgale piiskoppidest saavad olulised Liivimaa kirikuvürstid, ilmaliku ja vaimuliku territooriumi valitsejad. Zugleich ist dieses Thema mit der Herausbildung des katholischen Europa und der orthodoxen Welt sowie mit ihren gegenseitigen Beziehungen verbunden. - Im Laufe des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde Livland, das Gebiet des heutigen Estland und Lettland, hauptsächlich von Deutschen erobert und missioniert. Bei diesem Geschehen spielten neben heidnischen Kräften und lateinischen Christen auch die orthodoxen russischen Nachbarn eine große Rolle. In der wissenschaftlichen und populären Literatur wurden die sich daraus ergebenden deutsch-russischen Beziehungen in besonderer Weise instrumentalisiert. Ein Beispiel dafür bietet die Mythologisierung der Schlacht auf dem Eise des Peipussees von 1242. - Der Autor untersucht den russischen Aspekt der livländischen Geschichte von 1180 bis 1330 und rückt zugleich die vergleichbaren Ost-West-Situationen in Finnland, Preußen und Galizien ins Blickfeld. Sensationelles Ergebnis seiner Analyse ist, daß es in dieser Zeit weder den immer wieder beschworenen Ost-West-Antagonismus noch die oft behaupteten livländischen Kreuzzugsaktivitäten gegen die Rus' gab, sondern daß stattdessen häufiges politisches Zusammenwirken, kulturelle Kontakte und Durchlässigkeit der konfessionellen Grenzen für die Beziehungen charakteristisch waren. - Die Arbeit ist ursprünglich (2002) in estnischer Sprache als Dissertation entstanden und wurde anschließend noch überarbeitet und erweitert.

Yet, the statement was true throughout the Medieval period: if the Bishop of Tartu supported the Teutonic Order, the Order's star in Livonia was on the rise, as the other bishops could not stand against the two. 17th century chronicler Christian Kelch kept this in mind when he described this territory as the most powerful in Livonia.
