hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. The Railway Magazine, Vol. XVI (January to June 1905), G. A. Sekon (Editor) â" First Edition Publication: London, 30, Fetter Lane, Fleet Street, E.C. (Printed by Smiths' Printing and Publishing Agency), 1905 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 536. Condition Report: Good. The volume remains securely bound in its dark embossed cloth, which features an attractive foliate blind-stamped design, though it displays notable surface scuffing and discolouration along the lower margins of both boards. The spine remains firm and square, with its gilt lettering presenting bright and legible despite some mild fading and rubbing to the extremities. Internally, the text block is remarkably sound; however, there is moderate foxing primarily restricted to the preliminary leaves and endpapers, with the main body of text remaining largely clean and supple. The page edges exhibit standard, even age-toning commensurate with the publication's vintage. Catalogue Note: This is the sixteenth bound volume of The Railway Magazine, covering the first half of 1905. As a primary source for early twentieth-century railway history, the publication features detailed contemporary articles and is profusely illustrated throughout with halftone photographs, diagrams, and plates that capture the golden age of British steam locomotion. This particular copy is notable for bearing the blind-stamped emblem of 'M. A. Rudd & Son, Printers & Stationers, 180, Fore St. Exeter' on the front free endpaper, pointing towards a bespoke regional binding commissioned contemporary to the period. Included alongside the volume is a highly intriguing piece of Edwardian postal ephemera: a 1905 Post Office Express envelope bearing King Edward VII stamps and an urgent handwritten delivery instruction to a 'Mr. F. Loram' of 'Hornsby, Grantham' (presumably referring to Richard Hornsby & Sons, the pioneering agricultural engineering firm) at the 'Hornsby Stand, Show Yard, Hove'. Complete half-year Edwardian volumes ofÂThe Railway Magazine in sound contemporary bindings are increasingly uncommon on the open market, particularly those retaining contextual period ephemera. A captivating window into the zenith of British railway expansion, this volume ofÂThe Railway Magazine offers a treasure trove of Edwardian transport history. Under the editorial guidance of G. A. Sekon, the publication provides detailed, contemporary articles on locomotive developments, historic station profiles, and evocative passenger travel accounts from the first half of 1905. Meticulously compiled, it remains an indispensable primary source for railway enthusiasts, industrial historians, and collectors of vintage transport literature alike. N/A (illustrator). …
