Privately bound in half-leather over marbled boards with gilt lettering and tooling (Stylized beetle) on spine; raised bands. Top edge gilt. Heavy marbled endpapers. Complete with twenty collotype plates (Printed table of scientific names of insects depicted in this album indicates sixteen plates). Portfolio of twenty plates, each with a dazzling composition of five different insects, as indicated on table of plates. "The depictions of insects in the illustrations are remarkably detailed, revealing Séguy's unique interest in their scientific study as a source of inspiration fro artistic creation." (Metropolitan). Each plate features five naturalistic illustrations of different species. The plates were likely meant to inspire designs for textiles and wallpapers. The French illustrator Eugene-Alain Séguy, known as E.A. Séguy, was one of the most important exponents of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements of the 1920s. His work inspired a generation of artists throughout Europe. "Séguy produced eleven albums of nature themed illustrations and patterns, drawing inspiration from papillons (butterflies) and other insects, flowers, foliage, crystals and animals. Séguy was one of few artists that successfully combined both Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles in his work. Séguy's popular papillon and insect books had many people confuse him with the entomologist Eugène Séguy, who held a chair of entomology at the "Museum national d'histoire naturelle" from 1956 to 1960. Portfolio cover with some wear to edges and top outer corner bumped. Cloth with minor fraying and splitting at extremities. Margins of plates lightly foxed, but images still very clean. Bookplate of the Worcester Art Museum on front pastedown, covering the publisher's ads. Bookplate with "withdrawn" stamp on it. Half-title and each plate at lower margin with small stamp reading "School of the Worcester Art Museum. Overall very good, with beautiful plates. "E.A. Seguy was an artist and designer active in Paris during the first three decades of the 20th century. Very little is known about him, even his actual name and birth/death dates are in dispute. Seguy was one of few artists that successfully combined both Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles in his work. His brightly colored geometric patterns were intended to be used as inspiration for such decorative items as textiles and wallpaper. Seguy's albums were created using a unique printing process called pochoir, which was popular in France at the turn of the 20th century. Pochoir is a process that utilizes the method of applying pigment to paper through the use of stencils. First, the artist created an image in watercolor or gouache. The design was then analyzed to determine the necessary colors and number of stencils needed. The stencils could be cut from any number of materials, including copper, zinc, oiled cardboard, or celluloid. The paint was applied through the stencils by brushes or pompons. The prints were produced entirely by hand assembly line style, and each one was individually examined and approved upon completion." (E.A. Seguy, Insects, and the Art of Pochoir.
