Voyage Round the World recounts Commodore George Anson's circumnavigation of the world between 1740-1744. At the time, Britain was at war with Spain. Anson's mission was to disrupt Spanish trading routes in the Pacific, but his fleet was nearly destroyed during the voyage around Cape Horn. After repairing his fleet and procuring new crew members, he was successful in capturing a Spanish Galleon near Manila. There was a tremendous loss of life on the voyage, with only 188 of the original 1,854 surviving the journey. (Sabin 1625). The appendix was printed in fewer numbers than the full narrative and is a scarce text in complete form. Contains additional accounts of the native populations of the arctic region and samples of their language. John Ross (1777-1856) a British naval officer and explorer, undertook a second Arctic voyage in 1829-33 aboard the steam-assisted paddle vessel Victory, pursuing the Northwest Passage after his disputed 1818 findings. Entering Prince Regent Inlet, Ross wintered at Felix Harbour on the Boothia Peninsula, where his nephew James Clark Ross made the major geographical discovery of the North Magnetic Pole in 1831. Ice pressure trapped Victory for multiple seasons and forced a prolonged retreat by boat and sled to Lancaster Sound, where the party was eventually rescued by a whaling ship in 1833; despite the loss of the vessel, the expedition produced valuable magnetic and cartographic data and rehabilitated Ross's standing within the British scientific and naval community. Sir William Edward Parry (1790-1855) was a British naval officer and one of the foremost Arctic explorers of the nineteenth century, leading a series of Admiralty-sponsored attempts to chart and transit the Northwest Passage; between 1819 and 1825 he commanded multiple expeditions in HMS Hecla, Griper, and Fury, achieving farthest-west penetration through Lancaster Sound and wintering at Melville Island, while also conducting hydrographic surveys, magnetic and meteorological studies, and early forms of structured Arctic overwintering. His attempts at the North Pole influenced later Arctic expeditions by John Ross, John Franklin, and Roald Amundsen. Arctic Biblio. 5194. ~~ This famous journey was made to the mouth of the Coppermine River, largely overland. The coast east of the mouth was surveyed. It is one of the…most terrible journeys on record, many of the party dying from cold, hunger, or murder. The distance travelled was some 5,500 miles, and Franklin's narrative at once became a classic of travel literature. John Richardson and George Back, later famous Arctic explorers in their own right, were members of the expedition. The story related here is one of a most devastating and frightful journey of 5500 miles in northern Canada. One of the objects of the expedition was to determine the longitude and latitude of the northern coast of North America. The members of the expedition travelled both overland and by canoe, from Hudson's Bay westward toward Fort Chippewyan, then turned northward to descend the Coppermine River to Coronation Gulf and thence eastward over more than twelve hundred miles into Dease Strait; they finally returned to Fort Enterprise through the Barren Grounds. This expedition went overland via New York and York (Tor-onto) to the Mackenzie River and to the Arctic Ocean. Franklin here explored the Arctic coast from the MacKenzie delta west almost to Point Barrow. It was planned that he would met the Beechey expedition but they missed each other by 160 miles and a week. Part of the expedition led by Sir John Richardson explored the Arctic coast east to Coppermine River. Together they added 1200 miles of coast line to the map of the Canadian Arctic. 4to, 27cm, The First Edition, First Issue. (maps are dated, March, 1823), 4to., xvi,768p., with 30 plates (11 coloured), 4 folding maps; complete with errata, some light foxing or transfer on the plates and tissue guards, generally less than usual, in contemporary half calf, gilt title, match marbled boards, very good to fine complete copy of the first issue AND: 4to. 27.2cm, The First Edition, xxiv,320,clvii, [errata],pp. with 31 steel engraved plates & 6 rear folding maps inc. 1 in colour, (both dated, April, 1828), the maps have some light damp staining along the top margin & the last maps includes some foxing and an early repair, some of the plates have light dust soiling along the top margin, the title page has top two corner stained from transfer from the binding corners, in contemporary full brown calf, brown crushed morocco label, marbled boards, new endpapers, very good sound copy.

Cook's second voyage and travels in South Africa, by the famous Swedish naturalist. This is the first edition in French, the most profusely illustrated of the early editions of the book. This is an exa…mple of the quarto version (an octavo version appeared simultaneously). Sparrman, professor of zoology at Uppsala University, was in South Africa when Cook's second voyage called there in 1772; Forster engaged him to accompany the expedition as assistant naturalist. Though much of his book is a narrative of travels in Africa with emphasis on its flora and fauna (and a remarkable series of plates on termites and their habitations), he includes an interesting account of his voyage with Cook in the first volume - as Hocken notes, "Hairbreadth escape from collision of the two ships, not mentioned elsewhere. Shocking details as to the food on board. Described the plants which Georg Forster drew. Both interesting and amusing.". Sparrman published an expanded Swedish version of his account of the voyage in 1802 (with a second volume in 1818), but this account in its various versions was the only eighteenth-century text by this member of the second voyage. .
