Commenté et étayé de cartes, la qualité de cet ouvrage, de grand format… carré, est de qualité : couverture cartonnée et coffret pleine toile. Pour qui ne peut se déplacer à la découverte des contrées lointaines de notre planète, à plus forte raison lorsqu'elles sont dépeuplées et les conditions climatiques sévères, certains livres compensent une partie du voyage. Cet ouvrage est de ceux-là : on sent l'engouement du photographe en feuilletant ses souvenirs qui, page après page, reviennent par l'ampleur des images et la passion de l'auteur qui en a sillonné les moindres recoins. L'Iconographie: Ces images prises d'avion rendent compte de la diversité du Sahara algérien, région après région : Souf, Grand Erg Occidental, Hoggar, Tassili, en passant par les pistes entre oueds et oasis Ainsi chaque chapitre couvre-t-il un paysage de sables et roches différentes, avec parfois palmeraies artificielles et habitations humaines. Comme le dit Alain Sèbe, la description de ces horizons ensablés à perte de vue s'accommode mieux du vocabulaire marin : mers de sable, vagues, vents En particulier, le livre illustre quantité de formations géologiques innominées perdues aux confins de ce désert, mais connues des voyageurs et des habitants Plusieurs volcans éteints émergent ainsi de la surface, ailleurs fendue par de superbes pics et crêtes rocheuses qui serpentent entre les dunes. Le grand format du livre permet d'ailleurs des reproductions en pleine page, parfois panoramiques. Enfin, le désert, depuis longtemps habité, abrite une population que le photographe n'a pas oubliée. Il l'a restituée dans plusieurs prises en noir et blanc, saisies sur l'instant et dans leurs habitats, ou villes selon le cas, comme Ghardaïa dont l'urbanisme aggloméré et les ruelles étroites ne sont pas sans rappeler les vues d'avion de certaines bourgades de Toscane. Le Texte: Les photographies sont commentées, et l'auteur n'a pas hésité à rappeler l'histoire de certains peuplements en plein désert, leurs us et coutumes, ainsi que la genèse de certaines formations géologiques. On apprend ainsi que l'Ajjer, tout au sud, recèle une bonne centaine d'arbres méditerranéens originels, datant d'une époque reculée où le climat était plus favorable : ils font preuve d'une longévité exceptionnelle, entre quatre et cinq mille ans Des cartes étayent l'exposé encore que, malgré l'évident effort qui a été fourni pour leur réalisation, leur graphisme ne soit pas toujours clair au premier abord. Nonobstant, elles orientent le lecteur dans l'immensité saharienne, où il se perd volontiers dans les paysages, ou rien que dans la richesse des toponymes et du vocabulaire local : bahri, ghouts, ardhs, louz, zerb, chebka, djerids, tercha autant d'invitations au voyage.
