Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First Edition. [very nice copy, light wear to base of spine; jacket lightly soiled, very slight paper loss at spine ends, a few tiny closed tears]. (pen and ink drawings) A one-act trifle about a fellow with the improbable moniker of Wellington Yellowboy, whose trusting and devoted wife thinks he's working every night into the wee hours on editing the 123rd edition of the Encyclopaedia Brittanica -- but who in fact is stepping out on the town, cavorting with various young lovelies at Fancy Balls and the like. Mrs. Yellowboy's long-absent brother suddenly appears, however, and (after a suitable bit of mistaken-identity-type confusion) blows his cover. This previously-unpublished and unperformed piece, evidently found among Gilbert's papers (although the introduction doesn't specifically say so), was deduced from internal evidence to have been written sometime between 1855 and 1870 (in which year Mr. Gilbert was introduced to Mr. Sullivan). It's funny enough, in an arch-Victorian kind of way, but it probably would have benefitted from a few songs. Per the copyright page a "limited number of Copies [were] issued with hand-coloured illustrations; this, alas, is not one of that unknown number of copies, but is fairly scarce in its own right, especially with the illustrated jacket. Publishers binding with green cloth spine over yellow paper covered boards, with white paper laid on with title in black with multi coloured illustration to the upper cover light rubbing to the lower corners. With the original card sleeve present some old marks and splits. A near fine copy limited 300 copies of which 270 copies on laid paper this being number 252 with a signed presentation from Townley Searle September 1931 to Walter Grogan. Also included a Christmas card from Searle (not signed).…

Monograph No. 1 contains Beardsleyesque black and white drawing of puppeteer for title and front cover by "Allan Odle", poem "Villanelle of Montparnasse" by "Adolphe Roberts" [perhaps the Walter Adolphe Roberts, active in Jamaica from 1906] with a Beardsleyesque border, an anecdote entitled "A Gypsy-Freemason", concluded by an image imitating a woodcut, concluding with a reproduction of an "old Print" "Football in Crowe Street". Monograph No.3 containsanother image by "Allan Odle" [elsewhere spelt "Alan"] on title and front cover, just the first instalment of a story entitled "The Abyss" by L. Andreyeff, "Translated from the Russian by S.W. Pring", "to be continued." [Presumably this was the story later published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1929].…

Townley Searle, an eccentric humourist, curio dealer, and founder of the Gypsy and Folklore Club. He quickly fell out with the club's president, Augustus John, the acrimony eventually resulting in John smashing the windows at the club's rooms. Sets of the British sheets were issued with a different title page in the US by Dutton. Octavo. Illustrations throughout by author. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, colour woodblock-printed endpapers. Contemporary bookplate of one G B Powell of Newick, perhaps a distant relation of Robert Baden-Powell. An unusual and early book in English on Chinese cuisine. Issued simultaneously with a US issue published by E. P. Dutton, this copy retains the fragile and visually striking dust jacket. The first nine chapters are dedicated to Chinese foods and dining habits. From then on the work lists 101 recipes in longhand, mostly with general guidelines and omitting measurements or quantities.
