In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. First Edition Thus. Hardback. 8vo. pp xxviii, 464 [2] Vg in vg price-clipped d/w very clean bright copy with marginal linings, underlinings and notes of page numbers and one pencil illustration by Ronald Searle. Bought from the library of Ronald Searle, the book has notes of page numbers in his unmistakeable hand and underlinings of a few passages towards the beginning of the book. Searle, who was a French resident, illustrated Henry James's book for a French publisher 'Les Bostoniennes (Folio, Paris) in 1973. There is a sketchy pencil drawing by him at the front of a standing woman that is reminiscent of the d/w final version. He has concentrated mostly on the introduction which he notes as having the 'theme.'.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2 volumes, in matching, full, leather bindings. These are original (or very early) bindings. Fine gold borders on the boards, maroon and black title labels on the spines and also surprisingly elaborate gold decorations, both on the labels and the other spine panels (especially unusual for an agriculture book - but read on for association and possible reason). Nice marbled endpapers. Both volumes have some shelfwear at edges and bumps to corners, but all boards firmly attached, bindings tight and clean. First blank page of both volumes have neat handwritten gift inscription, 'Presented by James Searle Esq to Joshua M. Wallace. 1795.' Title page notes that this 1777 edition is the second edition. First volume has 500 pages plus errata page. 3 plates called for and all 3 present, although the second one is missing a large bottom corner section. Second volume has xxxii + 413 pages, including lengthy index. All 18 plates present and in very good condition. Plates are botanicals, mostly grasses and small 'weeds'. A fascinating association copy. James Searle was a delegate to the Continental Congress, from Pennsylvania, from 1776-1778. Joshua M. Wallace was a New Jersey landowner who was a member of the New Jersey Constitutional Ratification Committee. His signature on the ratification (Sept 1787) is an exact match for his name written in these books. It would appear that Wallace himself noted whom he had received the books from, in his own neat handwriting. Searle died in 1797. Wallace died in 1819. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it s an ABE stock photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Signed by Author(s).
