Novel about the latent incestuousy relationship between a 17-year-old girl who has been "educated in a convent [and] is starved for love" and her long-absent father, a recently-returned war correspondent. They have not seen each other in many years, and as they get re-acquainted it eventually dawns on the guy that her interest in him is uncomfortably intense. Unfortunately, in seeking a "cure" for her condition he confides in "the amateur psychiatrist Verplanck, an evil creature whose villainy is matched by his superficiality and charlatanism." This collaboration results in "a series of taut situations leading to an inevitable finale reminiscent of the horrors of Greek drama." Seager, whose first published novel this was, gained later recognition as a biographer of poet Theodore Roethke.

He notes in the 16 November 1963 letter that he is having a book of short pieces published soon and in that of 5 July 1964 he will be "subbing for Katherine Anne Porter who is ill." In January 1965 he is not sure whether he will make the conference due to a biography that he is working on and having to go re-check several things and in that of 19 March 1966 he is "laboring under the worst hangover of many years after an evening spent with Tom McIntyre" and adds a penned postscript "Read my story in this Months Playboy yet." The letter of 10 February enclosed a biography (not present) and writes "the only photograph that does not resemble a Levantine interested in the illegal traffic in children is in the hands of McGraw-Hill" who he has asked to send a copy to Humphreys.
