In den WarenkorbImportant collection of sources for the biography of Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536), put together and edited by Petrus Scriverius on the basis of the 1607 edition by Merula of the Compendium vitae, including a number of new sources and four hitherto unpublished letters by Erasmus. The humanist and independent scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) worked in Leiden outside the University, but he was in continuous contact with the most famous Leiden professors. Scriverius added commentaries and connecting texts by which the collection gained weight as materials for Erasmus' biography. Also through the later editions, edited by Thysius, and published by Joannes Maire in 1642 and 1649, the collection became very influential regarding Erasmus' "image" before the first critical biography of Erasmus was published by Joannes Clericus in 1705.With a few (near-contemporary?) manuscript annotations and markings in the margins. The vellum and the title page are slightly (dust) soiled, the pastedowns have detached from the inside of the boards and the front pastedown is lacking the upper outer corner, the bottom outer corner of leaf C6 is sligthly damaged (not affecting the text), some occasional very slight foxing. Otherwise in good condition.l Knaake II, 355a; STCN 832265039; Tuynman, 'Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660)', in: Quaerendo, 7 (1977), pp. 4-45, esp. 23-4; USTC 1027478; Vander Haeghen 182. Contemporary vellum, sewn on 3 vellum tapes laced through the joints, with the manuscript title on the spine, red edges. With a woodcut printer's device on the title page, a woodcut roundel with portrait of Erasmus on leaf 5, a divisional title page for Erasmus' letters, and a few woodcut decorated initials. It contains works by several different authors, opening with a brief letter by the compiler, the Dutch historian Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660), who wrote several historical works on the Low Countries. The first section is a history of Batavia, containing two works by Gerardus Noviomagus, also known as Gerardus Geldenhouwer (1482-1542). Next come two treatises dealing with the origin of the Batavians and other matters, written by Cornelius Aurelius (ca. 1460-1531), best known for his Divisiekroniek. Carrying a letter of recommendation from Justus Lipsius, the Flemish humanist, he travelled to Italy where he met Galileo in 1599. He travelled further through Europe, making the acquaintances among others of Kepler in Prague. He also corresponded with the Polish poet Szymon Szymonowic, and other Polish connections included his stay at the University of Altdorf 1614-1616 at the same time as the Socinian activity there around Samuel Przypkowski.

In den WarenkorbFirst and only edition of an amorous compilation of Latin poems and other texts, including letters, orations, disputations, text editions with notes, and commentaries. The texts, all on the subjects of love and marriage, were written by various authors, such Daniel Heinsius, Janus Dousa, Desiderius Erasmus, Thomas More, Petrus Scriverius, Scaliger, Cl. Salmasius, L. Capilupi, Ausonius and others. However, the editor of this collection, the well-known humanist and scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) brought Baudius to the fore as the main author. Dominicus Baudius (1561-1613) was a French Neo-Latin poet, scholar and historian who taught at Leiden from 1603-1613 where he became friends with a.o. Justus Lipsius, Janus Dousa, Daniel Heinsius, and Hugo Grotius. His private life was troubled by his drinking habits and love affairs, but he was considered as one of the best letter-writers and Neo-Latin poets of his time. In 1607 Baudius published a new and final version of his poems: Poematum nova edition. The present work includes poems which were omitted from the editions of his Poemata as well as a number of Baudius' letters, recounting his, often unsuccessful, erotic adventures. The famous ancient Latin poem Pervigilium Veneris is also prominently represented with more than one edition (by Justus Lipsius and Salmasius) including notes and commentaries. There are two variant editions of the present work, both printed by Joris Abrahams vander Marsce in Leiden, one for Franciscus Hegerus and Franciscus Hackius (the present copy) and the other for Lud. Elzevier. "Joli edition bien exécutés" (Willems). With the bookplate of C. Peeters, the well-known bibliographer and author of the Annales des Elzevier, mounted on the front pastedown. In den Warenkorb2 parts in 1 volume. First edition of this famous description glorifying the city of Haarlem, and one of the main early sources for the legend that Laurens Jansz. Coster was the actual inventor of the art of printing. The description itself, which is largely in verse and printed in three different types, is accompanied by beautiful plates. These plates include maps and town plans, views of streets, buildings, and interiors in and near Haarlem, and the earliest portrait of Coster. The extensive commentaries in the work were based on earlier writers, and documents found in the medieval archives of Haarlem. The work was written by the Haarlem minister Samuel Ampzing (1590-1632) to promote Haarlem. He began in 1617 and published it in 1628, more than ten years later, aided by the well-known scholar Petrus Scriverius who lived in Leiden at the time. This history of the city was not superseded until Pieter Langendijk's unfinished work nearly a century later.Ad 2: First edition of this important work in praise of Laurens Jansz. Coster, in which the scholar Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660) confirmed and defended the legend (established in 1588 by Hadrianus Junius in his Batavia) that it was Coster who had invented printing with moveable type, a claim that was accepted for centuries on the basis of the generally respected scholarship of Scriverius. The work was often added to Ampzing's description of Haarlem. The spine is somewhat soiled, two of the closing ties are nearly gone, the other two are torn, the boards are slightly rubbed. The work is lightly browned throughout, with an occasional stain. Otherwise a splendid and complete copy, with provenance of Antiquariaat Meijer Elte in the Hague.l Ad 1: Ekama 120; Nijhoff & V.
