First published under the pseudonym Lucius Cornelius Europeus, this satire exposes the vices of the Order. For a long time attributed to the Jesuit, Melchior Inchofer (1585-1648), it is now generally thought to be by Giulio Clemente Scotti, a disaffected Jesuit said to have been unfairly overlooked for the post of professor of Theology by his superiors. The work attacks the corruption, lies and calumny perceived at the heart of the order as well as criticising the worldly strategy of appointing only young men from wealthy families in order to benefit the society in the long term. It is preceded by an introduction which provides details on Melchior Inchofer and the political background of the satire. The Jesuits searched everywhere for this book in order to suppress it. The translation and the prefatory remarks are by Pierre Restaut (1696-1764). Relatively well held in Continental Europe, OCLC lists no copies in the UK and only Columbia in America. Mécontent de ses chefs, qui ne lui accordent pas le poste qu'il sollicite, il quitte la Compagnie de Jésus. On lui attribue un violent pamphlet contre les Jésuites, Monarchia Solipsorum, publié à Venise en 1645. Cette utopie, publiée en latin sous le pseudonyme de Lucius Cornelius Europaeus, a d'abord été attribuée au Jésuite hongrois Melchior Inchofer, avant d'être donnée de manière quasiment unanime à Scotti, bien que la question ait été récemment rouverte1. Die seltene und gesuchte "Monarchia Solipsorum" ist eine bittere Satire auf die Jesuiten im Stil einer utopischen Fantasie, die damals großes Aufsehen erregte. Der Autor beschreibt den Geheimbund der "Solipsen", die "ganz und gar allein herrschen wollen". Die angeblichen Gesetze, geheimen Anweisungen und verdeckten Operationen der Organisation werden dabei erörtert. Als Autors wird ein "Lucius Cornelius Europaeus" genannt, der meist mit dem italienischen Jesuiten Giulio Clemente Scotti (1602-1669) identifiziert wird. Andere schreiben das Werk dem in Wien geborenen Jesuiten Melchior Inchofer (1584-1648) zu, dessen Name in einer späteren Ausgabe angeführt wird. Die ebenso seltene Schrift "Observationes Politicae" ist eine konstitutionelle Kritik des Schwedischen Gesandten Schering Rosenhane (1609-1663) gegen die absolutistische Tyrannenherrschaft, verkörpert durch Kardinal Jules Mazarin, den er hier unverblümt angreift. Rosenhane vertritt den Standpunkt, dass die Macht zwischen dem Monarchen und dem Rat, dass heißt dem Hochadel, geteilt werden sollte. Auch diese Schrift wurde seinerzeit viel diskutiert und stellt einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur Rechtsdiskussion um die Monarchie dar.
