In den WarenkorbHard Cover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket As Issued. First Edition. First Printing. Publisher's half leather over burgundy linen boards, spine in five compartments separated by gilt borders, gilt lettering in two compartments, gray endpapers. These are the six issues of The Dial from January 1920 to June 1920, bound together. Illustrated with numerous B&W reproductions. The Dial was an American magazine published intermittently from 1840 to 1929. In its first form, from 1840 to 1844, it served as the chief publication of the Transcendentalists. From the 1880s to 1919 it was revived as a political review and literary criticism magazine. From 1920 to 1929 it was an influential outlet for modernist literature in English. The Dial was re-established in 1920 by Scofield Thayer and Dr. James Sibley Watson. Jr. as a literary magazine, the form for which it was most successful and best known. Under Watson's and Thayer's sway The Dial published remarkably influential artwork, poetry and fiction, including William Butler Yeats' "The Second Coming" and the first United States publication of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. The issues in this volume represent the first six months of Watson and Thayer's leadership. Includes works by John Dewey, Sherwood Anderson, Bertrand Russell, E. E. Cummings, Conrad Aiken, Louis Untermeyer, Van Wyck Brooks, Llewelyn Powys, William Butley Yeats, Carl Sandburg, Marianne Moore, Ezra Pound, Amy Lowell, Edwin Arlington Robinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Hart Crane, Paul Cezanne, Odilon Redon, Kahlil Gibran, and many, many others. . The covers are moderately worn at edges and corners, the text block is remarkably clean and fresh, tight and square, and the hinges are strong. One library marking on title page only (Gilbert M. Simmons Library). Scarce in this wonderful condition. VERY GOOD+. . The Dial Series. Ex-Library. Vol. 68. B&W Illustrations. Small 4to 9" - 11" tall.…

In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. Single octavo issue in original printed wrappers; i-viii,[105]-208,ix-xvi. Mild soil and edgewear, spine slightly rubbed, but a well-preserved single issue, internally free of markings or wear, paper fresh and supple; Very Good. Williams' "Three Poems" appears on pp.170-171; with slight alterations, all three sections would make their way into his groundbreaking collection, Spring and All, published later the same year by Robert McAlmon's Contact Editions. Other contributors to this issue include Djuna Barnes ("First Communion"), Bertrand Russell ("Leisure and Mechanism") and others. The front matter announces the resignation of Ezra Pound as the magazine's Paris correspondent, a position he'd held since 1920 - left unmentioned is the intense personal dislike for Pound (including but not limited to Pound's poetry) on the part of editor Scofield Thayer - Pound did not "resign;" he was in fact unceremoniously dismissed by Thayer himself, doubtless a source of Pound's open antipathy towards The Dial in succeeding years.…

In den WarenkorbOriginal, single octavo issue. Printed thick-paper wrappers; pp. viii,[1]-120,ix-xvi. Square and tight, with mild external soil and minute chips at spine ends; text remains bright, unmarked, and supple; Very Good. An important single issue of what was arguably the most influential little magazine of the early 20th century. Wallace Stevens' "Revue" - actually a grouping of six poems that would later be collected separately, including "Bantams in Pine-Woods," "The Ordinary Women," "Frogs Eat Butterflies. Snakes Eat Frogs. Hogs Eat Snakes. Men Eat Hogs."; "A High-Toned Old Christian Woman"; "O, Florida, Venereal Soil"; and "The Emperor of Ice Cream." All six (relieved of their catch-all group title) were included in Stevens' monumental first collection, Harmonium, published by Knopf in 1923. There are several other contributions here of similar value: Mina Loy's "Apology for Genius"; D.H. Lawrence's "The Fox"; Ivan Bunin's "Kasimir Stanislavovitch"; also reproductions of artworks by Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Boardman Robinson, etc.…
