"Voici, selon une conjecture du très docte Scioppius, l'origine des "Lusus in Priapum" : une niche, en forme de petit temple, abritait dans les jardins de Mécène, la statue du dieu des jardins ; un des convives du maître de la maison passa un jour devant la grotesque image ; il improvisa quelques vers, et il les inscrivit sur le mur de la niche ; d'autres vinrent, lurent et tinrent à ne pas rester en arrière. In den WarenkorbErstausgabe. - Der Schriftsteller Gaspar Scioppius (eig. Kaspar Schoppe; 1576-1649) kam nach dem Studium in Heidelberg, Altdorf und Ingolstadt 1597 nach Prag, wo er unter dem Einfluß des kaiserlichen Rats Johann Matthäus Wacker von Wackenfels zum Katholizismus konvertierte. Seit 1599 in Rom ansässig, wirkte er im Auftrag deutscher Fürsten und der Kurie publizistisch für die alte Lehre. 1607 warb er im päpstlichen Auftrag bei Kaiser Rudolf II., Erzherzog Ferdinand und König Maximilian I. von Bayern für die Bildung der kath. Liga. Später in Mailand lehrend, trug der in mehrere gelehrte Fehden verwickelte Scioppius mit seinen zahlreichen polemischen Schriften zur Verhärtung der konfessionellen Fronten bei. Seine Streitschrift Classicum Bellum Sacrum (1619) rief Papst und Orden zum Heiligen Krieg gegen die Ketzer auf. 1630 nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt, geriet er auch mit dem Kaiser in eine heftige Fehde. Allgemein verhaßt, zog er sich aus Angst vor Attentätern aus allen Lagern 1636 nach Padua zurück. - This is a polemic saturated with biting sarcasm.
