K.E. Rotschuh: Die Blutlehre in Deutschland und die Hämoskopie (pp.40-42). In: Einführung in die Geschichte der Hämatologie. Hrsg. v. K.-G. Boroviczény, H. Schipperges & E. Seidler (1974) Die damaligen Kenntnisse über Blut und Blutkrankheiten werden von Schwencke in einem Buch zusammengefaßt, dessen Titel 'Haematologia" lautet (1743)." K.-G. Boroviczény: Daten zur Geschichte der Hämatologie. "A Dutch physician, Thomas Schwencke, published in 1743 a monograph that was probably the first of its kind. It was dedicated to the highest authorities of the The Hague and bore the title "Haematologica, sive Sanguinis Historia". In the eleventh chapter, "De Partibus Constituentibus Cruorem et Serum," he quotes Leeuwenhoek and adds that his daily personal observation even of living individuals teaches that the constituent parts of the cruor are solid globules which are compact, ponderous and elastic and which in dead bodies as well as in living, are red, pink or black. He studies the gradual change of color of blood extravasion." C. Dreyfuß. Some Milestones in the History of Hematology (1957), pp.15-16, 30 "Hematology as a separate specialty, with its own methodology and hospital wards, only began to emerge between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. Before then, the pathophysiology and the clinical practice of hematologic diseases were mainly considered to be simply a part of internal medicine. However, the use of the term 'hematology' was, in fact, much older. In 1743, Thomas Schwencke (1694-1767), professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of The Hague, and also a physician to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during his concert tour in the Netherlands in 1765, published a volume entitled Haematologia, sive sanguinis historia."
