SCHWEITZER, ALBERT, 1875-1965 / MELLON, WILLIAM LARIMER, 1910-1989. Brothers in spirit: the correspondence of Albert Schweitzer and William Larimer Mellon, Jr. Translated by Jeannette Q. Byers ; foreword by Gwen Grant Mellon and Rhena Schweitzer Miller. Syracuse, N.Y.: Syracuse University Press, 1996, stated First Edition, and 1st printing number line ending in 1, xviii, 188pp., . Scion of the Pittsburgh oil and banking family, William Larimer Mellon, Jr., was married, the father of three, and a successful rancher in Arizona when, at thirty-seven, he read a Life magazine article about Albert Schweitzer's "reverence for life" that guided his mission hospital in a remote area of Gabon, Africa. Mellon immediately wrote to the famous humanitarian in Lambarene, expressing admiration of Schweitzer's life of service and the wish to engage in similar work with his wife, Gwendolyn. Schweitzer's reply in March 1948 was a lengthy letter of realistic encouragement. In time, Mellon received his medical degree from Tulane University and later established a well-equipped hospital in one of the poorest regions of Haiti, where, with his wife, he spent the rest of his life working as a physician and a community development engineer. The hospital continues to thrive. Brothers in Spirit brings together sixty-five of the letters written between 1947 and Schweitzer's death in 1965. Presented here in both English and the original French, they eloquently tell the story of a comfortable life abandoned for the goal of serving humanity. 9780815603443 ISBN 0815603444.…

SCHWEITZER, ALBERT, 1875-1965 / BRESSLAU, HELENE, 1879-1957. The Albert Schweitzer-Helene Bresslau letters, 1902-1912. Edited by Rhena Schweitzer Miller and Gustav Woytt ; translated from the German and edited by Antje Bultmann Lemke ; assistant editor, Nancy Stewart. Syracuse, N.Y.: Syracuse University Press, 2003, stated First Edition, and 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxix, 246pp., . The life and work of Antje Bultmann Lemke (1918-2017) is well worth investigating, library studies in Germany, private secretary to Ricarda Huch, emigration to the US in 1949, and a long career at Syracuse University. - Series: Albert Schweitzer library (Syracuse, N.Y.) "The world is familiar with Albert Schweitzer as humanitarian, theologian, philosopher, physician, and accomplished musician. These letters provide personal portraits of Schweitzer as a young man on a quest to find his role to better the lot of humankind, and of the woman who helped to shape that pursuit." "The years 1902-1912 were formative in the lives of Albert Schweitzer and Helene Bresslau. After their paths converged in 1901, their relationship blossomed through these letters. Helene, in searching for her own mission, became the trusted confidante of Albert." "Albert was twenty-six and Helene twenty-two when they met. Albert was preparing for an academic life in theology and philosophy. His abilities as a musician supplemented his intellectual work. Helene stepped beyond the conventions of the day by entering the nursing field, by founding a welfare program for single mothers, and by refusing to allow her age and gender to inhibit her from stating her opinions. As Schweitzer struggled and searched for his path, Helene provided the sounding board." "These letters mark Albert and Helene's progression from friends with no thought of matrimony to soulmates sharing the vision of giving their lives for something above and beyond their own happiness. When an opportunity to work in Africa emerges, they become true partners for the challenge ahead.". ISBN 081562994X 9780815629948.…
