The United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps (Army CIC) was a… World War II and early Cold War intelligence agency within the United States Army consisting of highly trained Special Agents. Its role was taken over by the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps in 1961 and, in 1967, by the U.S. Army Intelligence Agency. Its functions are now performed by its modern-day descendant organization; United States Army Counterintelligence. The National Counter Intelligence Corps Association (NCICA), a veterans' association, was established in the years immediately following World War II by Military Intelligence agents who had served in every area of military and domestic operations. The organization meets annually. Its newsletter, the Golden Sphinx, is published quarterly. It is a careful historical record of one man's experiences while serving in the US Army's Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC). This 1946 memoir provides a clear record of one of the war's less well-documented intelligence services, written in an articulate and often humorous style. John Schwarzwalder had finished graduate school when he joined the army and already had a good grasp of French, Italian and German. During the course of the war he worked his way up from private to major, and after the war he became a pioneer in the field of educational television in Texas and Minnesota. The book tells his story in vignettes, each one describing the CIC's principle goal--to capture enemy operatives and protect US military information from outsiders. His stories portray a variety of hoodlums, clandestine observers and undercover agents, a few of them clever, most of them incompetent, that the CIC apprehended between 1942 and 1945. He spent a year in North Africa, a year in Italy and a year in France before arriving in Germany just before the end of the war. During that time he dealt not only with enemy spies, but with several underground resistance efforts that were occasionally not too friendly to Americans. Two of the most interesting chapters describe Schwarzwalder's experience as officer in charge of the port at Naples (a 20-hour day filled with confusion and panic) and his eyewitness account of the death of Heinrich Himmler during a botched interrogation. Schwarzwalder devotes other chapters to the training and deployment of German and Italian spies, who were so demoralized by the end of the war that they surrendered to the first American they could find.
