Her work appears in many museums, and private collections including the libraries of the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This lovely miniature book is one in a series of four miniature books that the artist referred to as "The Seasons." This is the Spring book. Like the others in the series, the books are printed offset. However, each book had something handmade about it. April Rain has some illustrations that are painted in color, and it has die-cut windows. The accompanying text is a poem by Robert Loveman (1864-1923). Loveman's poem "The Rain Song" (also known as "April Rain") became very well known and was anthologized in many books of verse. It later inspired the Al Jolson song "April Showers." The book was designed and bound by Schwartzott. In addition to the two hand-painted flower spreads, the end papers are also handpainted. It is an accordion fold book with paper wraps with image of flower petals and green ribbon ties. Measures 2.8 x 2.8 inches. Unpaginated. Signed.

Zustand: Fine. One of 20 copies This artist's proof Number 2. Signed and numbered by the book artist. This exuberant book is a study into color. It flips to reveal fragments of text and color shapes. The work is an adventure in color, and the book is simple and joyous. It is done in the Jacob's ladder structure, a book technique developed during the 1800s. The structure creates the function. To work. the ladder must be picked up at the end and held on a horizontal position to release the first section, which then tumbles down into the next continuing until it reaches the bottom. Reversing the direction brings the ladder back to its original position. Printed on Rives BFK paper and remounted on acid free boards, then tied together with an assortment of colorful ribbons, thus the book is about the color experience. A paper wrapper houses the little book and as each layer unfolds it provides a short description about color. In a blue paper folder with a red paper closure that attaches with velcro. Accompanied by a translucent green sheet of paper where Carol give a more detailed discussion of the Bauhaus master Jose, Albers, the factors that Carol had to consider in the creation of this complex work. Further accompanied by a one page sheet with the description and an image of the book. In fine condition. Measures 4 x 4.25 x 1 inches. Unpaginated. ARTB/060925. Signed.

283 x 170 mm. (11 1/8 x 6 5/8"). [31] leaves.Translated by Edward FitzGerald. Very pretty light-blue cloth, sunken central panel with a pierced frame revealing an elaborate floral design, smooth spine. Housed in the original blue folding box covered with silk and with a printed paper label. Six colorful floral devices, six hand-marbled Japanese paper dividers, five tipped-on prints finished by hand with color pencil, paint, and silver and gold leaf, each of these prints preceded by two vellum paper windows (one laser cut and one printed) in the style of a Persian arch, plus one additional laser-cut vellum leaf preceding the text. Initials printed in purple, blue, pink, green, and gold, text in dark purple. Hint of soiling to cloth box, but the book in mint condition. This elegant edition of the Rubaiyat was beautifully illustrated, designed, and bound by book artist Carol Schwartzott, who first became interested in "Omar" after "finding a beautiful little leatherbound version at a secondhand bookstore." As she muses in her introduction, "Interpretation is the essence of the Rubaiyat. . . . Does the Rubaiyat describe godliness and spirituality according to Sufi mysticism? Or does it simply unveil the essence of carpe diem--the imperative to seize life and enjoy every minute of it. Perhaps, this ambiguity is why so many centuries later it still remains unique in its duality." This limited edition certainly walks the line of spiritualism and pleasure: Schwartzott's use of a pastel palette, semi-transparent leaves of vellum paper, and marbling techniques create a dreamy landscape for the reader to discover 75 quatrains of Omar Khayyam's verse as translated by Edward FitzGerald, while the different materials and beauty of the artist's work offer sensory delight on every page. But before one encounters the considerable enjoyment of the interior of the book, the intricately pierced binding provides a striking source of preliminary enjoyment. Schwartzott's work is represented at a number of prominent institutions, including the Smithsonian American Museum of Art, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Walker Art Center. No. 4 OF 25 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHWARTZOTT in pencil on the colophon.
