A collection of fantastical prose poems by Edmond Haraucourt (1856-1941), published by the Society of Bibliophiles "Les Sociétaires de l'Académie des Beaux Livres" organized by Octave Uzanne (1851-1931), this extravaga…nt book features full colour illustrations by by Léon Rudnicki (1873-1958), Alexandre Séon (1855-1917), Alexandre Lunois (1863-1916), and Carlos Schwabe (1866-1926), which are fantasy and symbolist painters. Four parts in one volume complete. 27.8x22cm, 144pp. Original paper wrappers, very minor creasing on the wrapper. Unbound, pages are loose. Occasional stains on the contents but mostly at the blank pages, the contents are clean, in near fine condition. Number 112 of unknown limited publication. Formerly owned by the book collector Édouard Pelay (1842 -1921). Ex-libris by George Laine on the glassine paper of the wrappers. Text in French.

Limited edition, number 53 of 75 copies on vélin du Marais, from a total edition of 77 copies. An original signed watercolour by Schwabe, captioned "La nudité de l'homme", is bound at the front. The edition is "A very beautiful and highly regarded publication. Carlos Schwabe's original compositions constitute one of the best int…erpretations of Baudelaire's poems; they are at once vigourous, admirably engraved in colour, and possess a particular artistic quality that surprizes with its artistic power" (Carteret, translated). The watercolour, apparently unpublished, illustrates a line from the poem beginning "J'aime le souvenir de ces époques nues", printed here on page 17. Schwabe has written the passage underneath in pencil: "La nudité de l'homme etc. sent un froid ténébreux envelopper son âme" ("The nakedness of man, etc. a dark chill enveloped his soul"). Carteret, Le Trésor du bibliophile: Livres illustrés modernes, IV, p. 62. Quarto (279 x 201 mm). With 10 colour illustrations and 13 vignettes, each repeated in black and white at the rear; original watercolour bound in at the front. Recent green morocco by Spanish master bookbinder Antonio Perez-Noriega, spine lettered in gilt, engraved wooden onlay to covers (after illustration by Schwabe), brown and blue suede endpapers, edges gilt on the rough; original wrappers bound in. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box. Repairs to original wrappers, else a fine copy.
