Third edition. 8vo. [10], 308 pp. 3 figs., numerous formulae, index. Original half maroon morocco over black cloth, gilt-stamped spine title; minor kozo treatment. Embossed stamp of John M. Andreas on front endpaper. Very good. Important work which went to several editions, on coal-tar color organic dyes. "In 1856, William Henry Perkin discovered the first synthetic organic dye, called mauve. Discoveries of similar dyes soon followed and they quickly became used to color foods, drugs, and cosmetics. Because these dyes were first produced from by-products of coal processing, they were known as 'coal-tar colors.'" - Color Additives: FDA's Regulatory Process and Historical Perspectives. / FDA, Food Safety Magazine, October-November 2003.
