First published in 1941, What Makes Sammy Run? was inspired by the rags-to-riches story Budd Schulberg's own father, Hollywood mogul B.P. Schulberg, here the ruthless Sammy Glick. The novel was controversial: Samuel Goldwyn tried to pay Budd Schulberg not to publish it, finding the novel anti-semitic, and the Communist Party of the U.S.A., of which Schulberg was a member at the time of publication, tried to get him to change it to meet communist ideals. Schulberg refused, left the party, and later spoke to the House on Un-American Activities, right about the time this Modern Library edition was published. A desirable work inscribed.
