Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - We know a great deal of what Michel de Montaigne (1533-92), Shakespeare's near-contemporary and fellow literary mastermind, thinks. We know, because he tells us on page after page of his Essais , which have marked literature and thought since the European Renaissance and remain to this day compelling reading. It might seem surprising, with this wealth of evidence at hand, that Montaigne could prove so elusive in his thinking. Yet elusive he proves, as volatile as he is voluble. What, we are left wondering, does all that thinking amount to How is it to be understood And what value might it have for us Montaigne has too often seen his thinking reduced to the expression of an '-ism'. Richard Scholar investigates the nature - and detail - of Montaigne's evolving attempts to seek out that elusive thing called truth. Examining at close quarters passages from across the Essais , Scholar provides twenty-first-century readers with a companion guide to a text that is rooted in the time and place of its composition and yet continues to speak to the present, to haunt its readers, to ask them the questions that matter.

Investigations -- 4. False Trials and the Impulse to Try in Shakespeare and his Contemporaries (SUBHA MUKHERJI) -- 5. Two Concepts of Reality in Antony and Cleopatra (N. K. SUGIMURA) -- 6. Dreaming, Looking, and Seeing: Shakespeare and a Myth of Resurrection (STEPHEN MEDCALF) -- Part III. Afterwords -- 7. When Shakespeare Met Montaigne (TERENCE CAVE) -- 8. The LastWord (A. D. NUTTALL) -- Bibliography -- Index. - Shakespeare s works do not embody any doctrine or set of beliefs, as his critics have long been tempted to suggest, but they do stage encounters with certain kinds of thinking ethical, political, epistemological, even metaphysical that still concern us nowadays. They can be shown to draw on ancient philosophies Platonism, Stoicism, Scepticism either directly or through medieval and continental Renaissance thought. Or their scenarios can be likened to those of other kinds of intellectual argument, such as legal or theological discourse. The essays collected in this volume, which is dedicated to A. D. Nuttall, demonstrate the value of thinking with Shakespeare, either as embodied in Shakespeare s own creative programme or in our use of philosophical paradigms as an approach to his works. 8vo, 2 pp. Leaf dimensions 21 x 16.5 cm. On good wove paper. 29 lines. Text clear and complete. On the first leaf of the bifolium, with the transcription, presumably by Twining, on the recto of the second. Addressed by Parr to Twining at Devereux Court in the Strand, on the reverse of the second leaf, which carries Parr's broken seal in red wax, and a postmark. In good condition, though a little grubby. Parr's handwriting is legendarily bad (he received a flogging at Harrow because of it, and never reformed), and although the transcriber has made a game effort, there are a few lacunae. The letter begins 'The name of Twining has long been endear'd to my mind by the intellectual and moral excellencies of the Persons to whom it belonged. The accomplishment and good sense of your Father will never be forgotten.' He praises Thomas Twining, before adding 'I gladly recognise Richard as my old and worthy Pupil at Norwich.' He thanks him for his repeated 'meritorious attention to me and my young man'. He is in his seventy-eighth year, and has 'little chance of visiting the Capital again', but invites Twining to call on him in Warwickshire, asking him not to be 'content with giving me a hurrying morning call - take your dinner and your bed at my parsonage'. He would be 'glad, very glad' to shake hands with Twining's 'justly esteemed Father'.

The subject of this letter is Huntingford's 'Pindari Carmina', 'excudit R. Watts sumptibus T. Cadell et W. Davies', published in London in 1814. Watts had been made Printer to the University of Cambridge in 1802, resigning in 1809 because, as Stokes notes in his 'Cambridge Stationers, Printers, Bookbiinders, &c' (1919), 'the Press did not prosper under his rule, although, when he left Cambridge, he did good work as a printer of Oriental volumes'. Between around 1812 and 1815 he was working in Broxbourne. In 1816 he moved to London, where he established the Oriental Type-Foundry, Temple Bar. 2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Huntingford begins by reporting that he 'received the clean sheets' that morning, and by apologising for sending an overweight frank. He continues: 'As this is almost the last time I shall have occasion to write to you, I take the present opportunity to thank you for the ready attention you have paid to my directions in the course of the Work, and to congratulate you on the credit that work will do to the Broxbourne Press, from the beauty of the Types & Paper, and, generally speaking from the great correctness with which it is executed.' In a long postscript he states that he will soon send what 'remains of the Work': 'the Dissertation, the additional Notes from Benedict, & the list of Errata [ ] The remaining clean sheets can be sent in franks.' The postscript concludes: 'The sooner the Work is done, the better; as I believe the school at Winchester is waiting for it. [ Huntingford was a Wykehamist ] Let me know how long it will take to knock up & bind the copies of the work, which you intend to send out, after the printing is finished.'.

The three letters total 7pp, 12mo. All three in good condition, on lightly aged paper. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington (1835-1911), 11th Baronet, whose father Rev. Dr Richard Harington (1800-1853), had been Principal from 1842 to his death. All three endorsed by Harington with date of receipt. The subject is the replacement of a stained glass window in the college, with Harington receiving the old window, which he put up at his Worcestershire country house, Whitbourne Court. In the first letter (2 January) he writes that 'the glass is now being taken down gradually, and it will probably be sent to you in about a fortnight'. He has told 'Mr. Kempe's man' to pack the glass carefully, and 'to keep the post together as much as possible'. The man tells Heberden 'that, with all care, it may be impossible to avoid doing some injury to the glass in taking it down, but I hope that this will not be anything serious.' Heberden has had 'a photograph taken of the window', which he will send Harington as soon as it is printed off. In a postscript he expresses the hope that 'when the new window is put up', Harington will 'come and stay with me in order to have a good look at it'. In the second letter (4 January) he states that it will suit Heberden and his sister if Harington and his wife will stay with them for a weekend at the end of the month. 'It is quite certain that the new window will be completed by that time. A portion of it is already put in, and Mr. Kempe has undertaken that it shall be all finished by the beginning of term, i.e. by Jan 22.' In the final letter (14 January) he expresses sorrow that Harington and his wife will not be able to stay over with his wife and daughter, and the hope that when they visit for the day on 30 January, they will at least come for lunch. 'The new window is completed today, and the old glass has been packed and will I believe be sent off today or tomorrow. I trust it will reach you safely.' He ends in the hope that in the coming week he will be able to send Harington a photograph of the old window.

See his entry in J. F. Smith, 'The Admission Register of the Manchester School'. 6pp, 12mo. Written in a neat, close hand. In fair condition, lightly aged. Folded three times. A vivid example of the methodology of the nineteenth-century English clerical antiquary. The main subject is the controversialist Richard Montagu (1577-1641), Bishop of Norwich, about whom, in January of the following year (that of his death), Backhouse would publish a letter in 'The Academy' under the title 'The Abbreviations in Bishop Mountagu's [sic] Dedication'. The recipient is not identified. The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, | Please to accept my best thanks for your Post Card. Will you kindly answer one or two more questions?' The questions relate to the 'Antiquities of Norwich', 'Hare's ed', 'the sentence in Browne about Mountagu's papers being sent to Rome'. He transcribes an entry he has found in the Bodleian Catalogue, and reports that he is 'trying also to discover Mountagu's will, to see whether he left directions about his MSS. It is possible that he may have bequeathed them to Nickson'. He states that he is 'in correspondence' with 'Mr. Foley', and gives details of two posthumous works by Montagu. He apologises for 'not returning sooner the papers you kindly sent me about Stationers' Hall'. After a Latin quotation he thanks him 'for sending me some time ago through Mr. Napier your opinion that Mountagu was not on the Committee of 1641'. A very long postscript deals with a number of related topics.
