Wer sich heute auf internationalem Niveau mit Naturphilosophie und Metaphysik der griechischen Frühzeit befassen will, greift zu der Ausgabe von Geoffrey S. Kirk, John E. Raven und Malcolm Schofield. Vor dem Hintergrund der älteren mythischen Denkweise arbeiten die Herausgeber an fünfzehn namhaften Vorsokratikern auf, wie sich das philosophische Bewußtsein zunächst im östlichen Mittelmeerraum (besonders in Milet), dann im Westen und schließlich wieder weiter östlich Schritt für Schritt entwickelte. Dabei stützen sie sich auf sehr viele Quellentexte, von denen über 600 sowohl in der Originalsprache als auch in deutscher Übersetzung vorgelegt werden. Anders als bei Diels-Kranz werden die Texte zu den einzelnen Denkern nicht nach A- und B-Fragmenten getrennt, sondern systematisch geordnet; die so entstehenden Textgruppen werden philologisch, historisch und systematisch kommentiert. Obwohl in jüngster Zeit viel über die Vorsokratiker gearbeitet wurde, gibt es zumal im deutschen Sprachbereich noch keine Ausgabe mit einer vergleichbar systematischen, zweisprachigen Textpräsentation und Kommentierung.
