While several edited collections of country studies have appeared since 1980, few authored books have treated coalition government as a general theme in comparative politics. The early days of coalition studies did generate such books, but most recent work on the subject is to be found in the journal literature. We set out to remedy this situation and in doing so have drawn upon the work and ideas of many others. Since we have both been involved in the field for the best part of twenty years, we have come to know personally most of those who have written on coalitions and have had stimulating discussions with many of them. Many of the arguments that we put forward in this book are the indirect product of such discussions, which means that their precise lineage is often difficult to determine.
