Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893) war ein französischer Politiker, der sein Erbe - eine Porzellanmanufaktur - für den Kampf gegen die Sklaverei in den französischen Kolonien verwendete. Als Abgeordneter der Nationalversammlung für Martinique 1848 war er Initiator des décret d abolition de l esclavage du 27 avril 1848 (Dekret zur Abschaffung der Sklaverei vom 27. April 1848), ratizifiert am 22. Mai 1848, welches die völlige Abschaffung der Sklaverei in Frankreich und seinen Kolonien festschrieb. Das Buch schildert den restaurativen Staatsstreich, der am 2. Dezember 1851, dem symbolträchtigen Jahrestag der Schlacht von Austerlitz und der Kaiserkrönung von Napoleon I, stattfand. Dabei ließ die konservative Regierung unter Louis Napoleon Bonaparte wichtige strategische Punkte in Paris vom Militär besetzen und führende Mitglieder der gesetzgebenden Versammlung verhaften. Außerdem wurde der Belagerungszustand für Paris ausgerufen, das Parlament aufgelöst und eine neue Verfassung angekündigt. Ein Teil der Parlamentarier versuchte im Parlament über legale Gegenmaßnahmen zu beraten. Die Versammlung wurde aber aufgelöst und die Abgeordneten verhaftet. Von der entschieden republikanischen Seite wurde am 3. Dezember ein außerparlamentarischer Volksaufstand ausgelöst, der Paris und einige angrenzende Gebiete erfasste. Da die Zahl der Beteiligten aber deutlich hinter den Barrikadenkämpfen von 1830 und 1848 zurückblieb, konnten die Unruhen rasch niedergeschlagen werden. Diese Kämpfe kosteten auf Seiten der Republik mindestens 400 Tote und noch mehr Verwundete. Einbandbünde und -kanten etwas berieben. Prachtrand mit Goldschnitt in rotem Kunstleder. Second edition published in the same year as the original London edition, augmented, and published in pocket size for secret distribution in France. Victor Schoelcher (1804-1893), republican and author of the degree abolishing slavery in 1848. He visited the USA in 1829 and it was during his trip there that he became convinced that it was necessary to abolish slavery. During the first ten years of the July monarchy he worked for several journals such as the Revue Républicaine, the Revue indépendante, La Réforme, and others. He went again on a long voyage and upon his return prepared the degree abolishing slavery in the French colonies. He served in the garde nationale during the siege of Paris in 1870-1871 and sided with the democrates and socialists. The present work deals with the 'coup d'état' of 1851, and Schoelcher, together with Victor Hugo, Baudin and others attempted to rouse the old revolutionary district of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine against Louis Napoleon after the 'coup d'état'. The work was written during Schoelcher's exile in London. - Annotations on the front blank leaves and an ownership's entry reading 'Lucien Rodanet, 1877', the letters L.R. stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine.
