Dazu verwendete der Autor zwei Unternehmenspanels, die aus periodischen Unternehmensbefragungen des ifo Instituts, München, gebildet wurden und die sich durch die große Anzahl an Unternehmen, die Vielzahl der Unternehmensangaben und den langen Beobachtungszeitraum auszeichnen.Der Schwerpunkt lag in der Untersuchung sowohl des Zusammenhangs zwischen Produkt- und Prozeßinnovation und Investition als auch der Determinanten dieser Entscheidungen: Produkt- und Prozeßinnovationen erfolgen oft simultan, denn die Herstellung eines neuen Produkts kann mit der Änderung des Produktionsverfahrens einhergehen. Gleichzeitig erleichtern verbesserte Produktionsverfahren die Weiterentwicklung der Produkte. Zudem erfordert die Herstellung eines neuen Produkts oft die Ausweitung der Produktionskapazität und damit Investitionen. Auf Seiten der ökonomischen Theorie existieren zu dieser Fragestellung wenige Untersuchungen. Dies war Anlaß zur Modellierung eines Wachstumsmodells, aus dem die für die empirische Untersuchung notwendigen Schätzansätze abgeleitet wurden.Als wesentliche Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung lassen sich nennen: Hohe Investitionsausgaben steigern die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Prozeßinnovation und verringern gleichzeitig die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Produktinnovation. Im Gegensatz dazu wirken sich hohe Innovationsaufwendungen positiv auf die Investitionsausgaben aus. Eine der wichtigsten Determinanten ist die Unternehmensgröße, denn in allen Schätzungen zeigte sich ein positiver Zusammenhang zwischen der Unternehmensgröße und dem Innovationsverhalten.; Dissertationsschrift.
