Von 1964 bis 1968 gehörte er als Finanzminister der österreichischen Bundesregierung an und fungierte in der Folge, von 1968 bis 1973, als Präsident der Oesterreichischen Nationalbank.Im Zentrum des wissenschaftlichen und politischen Lebens stand für Wolfgang Schmitz stets die Suche nach einer sozialen Ordnung, welche die tragfähigen Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten zur Selbstverwirklichung des Menschen - ausgehend von seiner Natur und (mit Johannes Messner) seinen existenziellen Zwecken - schafft.Seine Arbeiten widerspiegeln innovative Ansätze im Bereich der Wirtschaftsethik sowie Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen aus theoretischer wie praktischer Reflexion konkreter wirtschaftspolitischer Gestaltung.
