Couple of small marks to cloth. Red cloth with gilt lettering. Dr. Gustav Jaeger is well known to the English-speaking world through his hygienic discoveries and researches. But, apart from his reforms in this direction, he has for many years been an active investigator in numerous branches of Organic Science. The contents of the present volume are divided into the following parts: - Part I - Zoological. Part II - Anthropolgical. Part III - Varia. I would draw the reader's attention to the two letters of Charles Darwinb, which will be found at the beginning of the book. They are of interest both from a scientific and from a historic point of view, revealing not only the scrupulous desrie for the investigation of truth, but also the characterstic modesty and simplicity, of the greatest natural philosopher of our century. 261 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

Previous owner's inscription in pencil on Contents page. ; ii, [8], 261, [3] pages + 2 leaves with a 3 page facsimile Charles Darwin letter. Maroon cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 214 x 134mm. Text in English, translated from German. The facsimile Darwin letter from Charles Darwin to Gustav Jaeger is dated February 3rd 1875, and discusses Jaeger's 1874 book "In Sachen Darwin's insbesondere contra Wigand." The letter is also given in letterpress, which is easier to read than Darwin's handwriting in the facsimile. Darwin writes "I received this morning a copy of your work 'Contra Wigand,' either from yourself of from your publisher, and I am greatly obliged for it. I had, however, before bought a copy, and have sent the new one to our best Library, that of the Royal Society. As I am a very poor German scholar I have as yet read only about 40 pages, but these have intereste me in the highest degree. Your remarks on fixed and variable species deserbve the greatest attention; but I am not at present quite convinced that there are such independent of the conditions to which they are subjected.
