Original NASA Black and White Photograph of Astronauts and NASA managers being served steak by Louis Hartsell, the chef in the Astronaut Training Facility at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Kennedy/Cape Canaveral. This is an original, apparently unreleased photograph, no NASA serial number of notations, distributed at the center without any public information data on reverse. It was part of Hartsell's collection of astronaut photographs. Others in the photograph may include Alan Shepard and Don Eisele, along with Brainard Holmes, Flight Director, but this has not been verified.

The book presents the seven essaying why they joined Project Mercury (the reasons embrace pride in country and in self), the meaning of teamwork and training, the physical and psychological exams (almost all make sub rosa cracks re headshrinkers), and, most important, a full-scale record of the preparations for and enactment of the first sub-orbital and orbital take-offs by participants Shepard and Grissom, Glenn and Carpenter. It's the latters' accounts which prove the most exciting and exemplary, especially the Friendship 7 flight. So for all the Redstone, Atlas, Canaveral, NASA details and all the challenges and courageous responses shown. The book is a rewarding revelation.

The cover states: "The Only First-Hand Story of America's Man-in-Space Project." This is by the seven astronauts of Project Mercury with Loudon Wainwright a staff writer for Life Magazine. Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely, ideally before the Soviet Union. Taken over from the US Air Force by the newly created civilian space agency NASA, it conducted twenty unmanned developmental flights (some using animals), and six successful flights by astronauts. The program, which took its name from Roman mythology, cost $1.8 billion adjusted for inflation. The astronauts were collectively known as the "Mercury Seven", and each spacecraft was given a name ending with a "7" by its pilot. Special Edition. Pre-flight printing [stated].

Walter Marty "Wally" Schirra Jr. (March 12, 1923 - May 3, 2007), (Captain, USN), was an American naval aviator and astronaut. He was one of the original seven astronauts chosen for Project Mercury, the first effort by the United States to put humans in space. On October 3, 1962, he flew the six-orbit, nine-hour, Mercury-Atlas 8 mission, in a spacecraft he nicknamed Sigma 7, becoming the fifth American, and ninth human, to travel to space. In the two-man Gemini program, he achieved the first space rendezvous, station-keeping his Gemini 6A spacecraft within 1 foot of the sister Gemini 7 spacecraft in December 1965. In October 1968, he commanded Apollo 7, an 11-day low Earth orbit shakedown test of the three-man Apollo Command/Service Module. He was the first person to go into space three times, and the only person to have flown in Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, logging a total of 295 hours and 15 minutes in space. After Apollo 7 he retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of captain and from NASA, becoming a consultant to CBS News for its coverage of the subsequent Apollo flights.
