The present work report a total of 339 species of Notodontidae from China (including Taiwan). The only existing comprehensive studies about the Notodontidae of China (Cai 1979, 1882a) report only 185 species (about 55 %). However, even this larger number of species may list only about 70 % of the Chinese species of Notodontidae because of the large unexplored areas in China. 38 taxa (31 of them in the rank of species) were recognized as new to science and were described in advance (Schintlmeister 1989). 132 taxa (44 of them are on generic level) were recognized as new synonyms. 54 taxa were new combined and 19 taxa have changed their status. 3 lectotypes have been designated. 343 pp., 759 figs, 21 maps, br. 8.…

The first volume of a planned series dealing with the neotropical moth family Notodontidae. A previous publication in Volume 4 of this series, An Illustrated Type Catalogue of the Notodontidae in the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C. clarified the identity of many neotropical notodontids by designating of 733 lectotypes, which were described primarily by Schaus 1889-1939 and Dognin 1889-1924. The last comprehensive description of American Notodontidae by Draudt 1931-1933 in Seitz contains less than 30% of the species treated here in the revised genera. A checklist of neotropical Notodontidae by Becker (2014) is merely a compilation of names without illustrations or explanations. The many new combinations and synonymies provided by Becker are often not based on comparisons of type material and appears as shown in this work sometimes incorrect. The present publication revises the genera Crinodes Herrich-Schäffer, 1855, Moresa Walker, 1855, Chlorosema Becker, 2014 and Rosema Walker, 1855. Twenty taxa are newly synonymized and 12 lectotypes are designated. Out of 114 species, currently treated as valid, 55 are newly described, as are seven subspecies. Notodontidae is a family of moths with approximately 3,800 known species. This work gives a taxonomic treatment of the species known from South Africa. The Introduction sets out the way in which species are to be described, then follows an historical account of the study of these moths in South Africa with biographical details of the chief contributors. Much of the material described is in the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History (formerly the Transvaal Museum) in Pretoria. A checklist of the 99 species treated follows with 44 names reduced to synonymy which is as important as the twelve new species and three genera which are described. The taxonomic part, including description or redescription of each species, fills the main part of the book. Each species has the original description cited and is then described under the headings: diagnosis, bionomics, and distribution. A dot distribution map is included in each case, which includes all the countries of Southern Africa north to the Zambezi River. In critical cases the descriptions are augmented with illustrations pointing out the differences between closely related species. For newly described species the label data of the type series is given in full. There follows a full list of references and a list of the taxonomic changes introduced. The genitalia figures, occupying 81 pages, are photographs in monochrome, male and female of the same species alongside each other; in many cases the posterior segments of the male abdomen are also illustrated. The colour plates of adults show life size specimens on a uniform pale blue-grey background in most cases and are of high quality. For some species there are also photographs of blown larvae; the data relating to each specimen illustrated are cited in full. The present publication deals with the genus Hemiceras Guenée, 1852, which has gained a poor reputation as a taxonomically difficult group. The last comprehensive description of American Notodontidae by Draudt (1932-1933) in Seitz contains 167 species (including 2 species in the genus Schausiades), with 88 species illustated. A checklist of neotropical Notodontidae by Becker (2014) lists 201 species in the genus Hemiceras. Fifty-six taxa are newly synonymized. Seven lectotypes and one neotype designations stabilize the nomenclature by fixing the identity of these species. The 1038 primary types (holotypes and lectotypes) of the neotropical and nearctic Notodontidae (excluding the Dioptinae), at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. (USNM) represents the largest single collection of notodontid types from the New World. These are compiled to a type catalogue in alphabetical order. An additional 34 primary types of Palaearctic and Oriental Notodontidae are assembled and illustrated in a separate chapter. This catalogue provides the original combination with full reference, the type material according to the original description, the type locality and the current status of the taxon. From syntype series 733 lectotypes are designated to stabilize the nomenclature. One of them is deposited at BMNH, all other are in the holdings of USNM. The types of 54 species, including three types of infrasubspecific taxa, were not traced. The adults of all traced primary types and some paralectotypes 1292 figures are illustrated in natural size and in colour. The corresponding genitalia preparations of 97 slides primary types are also figured. The type localities in Central and South American are tabulated with approximate geographical coordinates and also current place names and presented in two maps. Rifargia morula Dognin, 1914 is recognized here as a junior synonym of Rifargia mortis Schaus, 1905 (syn. nov.). This 11th volume in the World Catalogue of Insects comprises 4415 species in 532 genera of Notodontidae & Oenosandridae (Lepidoptera), which is about 1000 species more than ever before provided in any catalogue. Altogether 7434 names of taxonomic entities are included. Twenty-seven cases of new synonymies on genus level and 72 new synonymies on species group level are reported and 15 statuses of taxa are changed. One Neotype and 24 Lectotypes are designated to stabilize the nomenclature. In line with recognized homonymies 4 replacement names are proposed. The catalogue also includes 107 new combinations of Notodontidae. The bibliographical source of almost all of the listed taxa (including the infrasubspecific entities) has been checked by the author personally. A Review of the genus Lymantria Hübner, [1819] and its species results in the genus being divided into 12 subgenera, 9 of these introduced and described here as new. A total of 167 species of Lymantria are now known. All species except of three species ncertae sedis are illustrated in colour and presented with male genitalia.
