The saga deals with a process of blood feuds in the Icelandic Commonwealth, showing how the requirements of honor could lead to minor slights spiralling into destructive and prolonged bloodshed. Einar Ólafur Sveinsson (1899-1984), was an Icelandic scholar of Old Norse literature, Professor of Icelandic Literature at the University of Iceland and a foremost interpreter of Njals saga. In this book he shows readers how to value it as a work of art, and he studies the chief characters as, historically or not, the author of the saga portrays them. The book is bound in the original purple cloth covered boards with blue titling on the spine.
