In den WarenkorbRe-backed preserving the original spine hard back binding in publisher's original brick red cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, bevelled edges. 8vo. 9'' x 6''. The work is, in part, a parody of Hegel, and of German Idealism more generally, Carlyle had difficulty finding a publisher for the novel, and began composing it as an article in October 1831 in Fraser's serialised Magazine in 1833-1834. The text would first appear in book form in Boston in 1836, its publication arranged by Ralph Waldo Emerson, who much admired the book and also Carlyle. Emerson's savvy dealing with the overseas publishers would ensure Carlyle received high compensation, which the novel did not attain in Britain which was first published in London in 1838. Contains tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece (viii), 308 pp + 32 pp publisher's catalogue dated January 1869. Browning to the tissue-guard, sporadic foxing to the end sheets, ink name verso front free end paper 'Rosa F. Gibson - Christmas Day 1869', simple name plate to the front free end paper. Binding sound and tight. Member of the P.B.F.A. NINETEENTH CENTURY.

4to (203 x 255 mm). 1 p. A letter from the satirical poet to a government ministry on a theme of evergreen concern to artists everywhere: expenses. Barthélemy says he encloses a bill for the printing of his pamphlet, coming to 120 Francs 30 centimes, requesting it to be forwarded to the minister for reimbursement: "J'ai l'honneur de vous transmettre la note des frais d'impression pour ma brochure, monta à la somme de 120 fr. 30 cm. Ayez l'extrême obligeance de voulais bien en dire un mot à M. Le Ministre, qui donnera ses ordres pour le payement de cette facture [.]". - A frequent collaborator of the poet, dramaturge and novelist Joseph Méry (1797-1866), Barthélemy's works often caused scandal and official displeasure, leading to his imprisonment in 1829 until the revolution of 1830. After this, his praise of Louis-Philippe earned him a pension, which was suspended in 1832 following his publication of several satirical verses attacking the government. Following the restitution of his pension, he refrained from publishing satire until 1844, although his later works failed at recapturing his previous success. - Although undated, this letter requesting reimbursement from a ministry must have been written during a period after 1830 when he enjoyed official support. A peek into the relationship between art and government in nineteenth-century France. - Paper somewhat brittle and creased, light browning and foxing, minor marginal tears. Writing clear and clean.

1st edition. Later Paper Wrappers, 70, [4] pages, 18 x 12 cm, Singerman 4588. Gerson Rosenzweig (1861-1914), was born in Lithuania, he taught Hebrew in Bialystok, and in 1888 he emigrated to the United States. Rosenzweig edited several Hebrew periodicals - Ha-Ivri (1891-1902), Kadimah (1899-1902), Ha-Devorah (1911-12) - they were short-lived and earned him neither fame nor a livelihood. He also edited Hebrew columns in the Yiddish press. Though he was a versifier rather than a poet, he had a genuine flair for satire and he was known to his contemporaries as the "sweet satirist of Israel" and as a parodist he earned an honorable place in Hebrew literature. His Talmud Yanka'i ("Yankee Talmud, " 1907, 1909) poured a stream of ill-humored sarcasm on the peddler, the teacher, the rabbi. The pages of that collection of satires resembled the pages of the Talmud: the text in large letters, wreathed by commentary in Rashi script, is divided into six tractates instead of the talmudic six orders. Rosenzweig also denounced the vulgarisms of the country, the worship of money, the religion of success. Epigrammatic neatness was his forte. Example: "What is the difference between a convert and an anarchist? A convert denies what he believes, an anarchist believes what he denies. " Using a biblical phrase he quipped sardonically about his impending death by cancer of the tongue: "Life and death are at the mercy of the tongue" (Prov. 18: 21). He published two books of epigrams: Shirim, Meshalim u-Mikhtamim (1893) and Hamishah ve-Elef Mikhtamim (1903; reprinted in Russia). (Silberschlag in EJ). Subject(s): 19th Century Poetry. OCLC: 18293289. Lacking original paper wrapper (probably identical to title page), touch of edgewear and toning to title page, Good+ Condition (B) (AMR-36-25AXX-LBD-'ex).

Two non-uniform volumes: Vol. I in later half calf, raised bands, spine lettered in gilt; Vol. III in contemp. full mottled calf, spine ruled in gilt, black morocco label; hinges starting but sound, spine chipped at head & tail. Volumes I and III of this monthly 'venture in scurrilous literature', founded by the noted wit George Manners, 1778-1853. He remained at the helm until 1812, and would later serve as British consul in Boston. The work contains reviews of new publications, theatre criticism, political musings, 'domestic occurrences', original poetry, letters, and observations on 'fashionable society'. The folding plates were coloured in the earlier issues, but changed to sepia part way through 1808, supposedly after the the artist disappointed the editor.
