The tradition oriented rights of the tribal people of India on lands and forests are not only the indigenous issue developed long ago but in most of the cases these surpass the frontiers of history. After their many sided confrontations with the contemporary conceptions the question of traditional rights and their feasibility has raised a lot of queries and counter queries in the sphere of safeguarding the indiscriminate destruction of the forested environment and unusual utilization of the lands in nature. The question has not only been confined to the academic circle but it has stirred conspicuously the political domain of the country very recently. The tribal people living in and around the forests are not the destructor but the conservers of forests and related natural resources. Their love and sympathy for the natural resources have been processed characteristically in their cultural patterns and ultimately these have oriented the all embracing tribal philosophy. These are needed to be evaluated in their proper perspectives with scientific outlook reinforced by concrete case studies. The present anthology pledges to supply relevant information to all concerned in its as many as nineteen discernible papers including one introduction presented by the veteran and young as well as promising social scientists. The Primitive Tribal Groups embrace such tribal people who are characteristically benighted in the different dimensions of their way of life. Economically they still indicate their specific trend of continuation of the archaic pattern of existence. Living very close to nature and their utter dependence on the bountiful natural resources their way of life and basic philosophy have been moulded accordingly and thus any sort of severance from this deep rooted matrix results in an imbalancing situation. After having been specially identified as the Primitive Tribal Groups by the Government of India on the basis of certain administrative criteria these sorted out tribal communities are promised to offer all types of help and cooperation for mitigating their hazards and anxieties consternations and tribulations in their life situation. It has been observed from the working of the various extensive efforts taken up by the government for the developmental activities of the ill fated people that varied constraints have thwarted the very endeavour due to certain obvious reasons. In order to understand the very pretext of this unwanted situation there is an urgent necessity to study the different aspects of life and thinking patterns of these primitive tribes distinctively as they differ from each other in content and character. This anthology has taken the ardent pledge to highlight copiously the integrated perspective of the different dimensions of life of the Primitive Tribal Groups living in the different ecological settings in India and having discrete understandings as well as problems. The total canvas has been designed here with the empirical findings on PTGs contributed by the celebrated sc.…

There is no denying of the fact that the Dalits have been raising various thoughtful questions during the different times that are found to be reflected in the variegated behaviour patterns and action orientations of this oppressed group of humanity to having multifaceted ways and means for the maintenance of life. Gradual awakening of the Dalits under the leadership of the towering personalities no doubt has exerted a strong protest against the unjust thinking patterns nurtured by the advantageous caste groups. The emergence of a newly developed perception of identity among the Dalits has brought forward a challenging force against the age long system of exploitations at cultural economical and political levels. The present anthology comprised of 17 papers and a broad based introduction has presented an overall cognizance on the patterns and perspectives of the varied spheres of interactions that have been and are being effected in the long course of their journey through time and space. The application of historical sociological and anthropological methodologies in the elucidation of the multiplex dimensions of the Dalit issues has no doubt added a novel angle of vision to this cohesive compendium. It will by dint of its merit invite a wide range of readership especially from the domains of sociology social history political science anthropology and also it will be attractive to the persons connected with the administrative spheres as well as social planning and development. 401 pp.…

Sundarban the beautiful forest in the southern border of West Bengal is the richest mangrove ecosystem in the global perspective. It is not only charming as its name implies but is characterised by tremendous awe inspiring nature having multitude of mangrove species and numerous dreadful animal forms both in land and water. The network of mangrove forest is criss crossed by the turbulent rivers and estuaries which are abundant in fish population of multifarious varieties. Sundarban fishermen are the traditional workers in this glorious ecological niche and their main principle of working in the midst of dreadful land and water is very naturally the adaptation of various measures to cope with the multifaceted untoward circumstances. Sundarban fishermen by virtue of their traditional strategies associated with indomitable mental set up could have been able to explore the geo physical dimensions socio bio ecological background as well as animal behaviour in their own concepts and understandings. The book is based on the integrated effort for highlighting the processes and procedures of the indigenous fishing communities through time and space to grapple with the eco environmental setting in making their living through uninterrupted fishing operations. The life and work of Sundarban fisherfolk are centred round the interactions of man fish and water. The reciprocal action orientations of these three interrelated factors have well been illustrated in the book for going deep into the eco cultural and techno economic spheres of activities of these traditional fishing personnel. 272 pp.…
