This book is artist and critic Kimmo SarjeÆs visual and conceptual inter-weaving of crucial themes of the end of the last century; of the erosion of socialism and the modern. SarjeÆs montages engage in dialogue with the philosophy of the modern using visual parallels, and his writings probe postmodern questions. He re-works the modernists and avant-gardists, from Barnett Newman to Vladimir Lenin and from Kazimir Malevich to Alvar Aalto and Sigurd Frosterus, sometimes dismantling them, sometimes constructing them. Here the modern appears in all its power and decadence. The 20th centuryÆs fin de si?cle gets a personal interpretation., Finnish/ English, Year2003, Illust. B/W72, Illust.
