L?ouvrage aborde la relation artistique entre Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1734-1806) et Hubert Robert (1733-1808) en étudiant leur regard respectif sur la nature. Les deux artistes se sont rencontrés au Palazzo Mancini à Rome en 1756. Robert était loge à l?Académie de France depuis deux ans, tandis que Fragonard, après avoir remporté le prix de Rome, y séjourna en tant que pensionnaire. Après deux années de découragement, Fragonard sut retrouver le goût du dessin, en compagnie de l?énergique Robert. Ils dessinèrent ensemble sur le motif dans les sites les plus prestigieux de Rome et de ses alentours.
