L?ouvrage aborde la relation artistique entre Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1734-1806) et Hubert Robert (1733-1808) en étudiant leur regard respectif sur la nature. Les deux artistes se sont rencontrés au Palazzo Mancini à Rome en 1756. Robert était loge à l?Académie de France depuis deux ans, tandis que Fragonard, après avoir remporté… le prix de Rome, y séjourna en tant que pensionnaire. Après deux années de découragement, Fragonard sut retrouver le goût du dessin, en compagnie de l?énergique Robert. Ils dessinèrent ensemble sur le motif dans les sites les plus prestigieux de Rome et de ses alentours. Lorsque les deux hommes poursuivirent leurs carrières à Paris, après 1765, chacun sut développer sa propre sensibilité en empruntant un chemin différent : Robert en réalisant une ascension professionnelle diversifiée au sein des bâtiments du roi ; Fragonard en rompant avec l?Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture pour se tourner vers une clientèle exclusivement privée.L?ouvrage permet de présenter la complémentarité des deux hommes, en particulier l?intellectualité de Robert et la sensualité de Fragonard que favorisent leurs thèmes de prédilection respectifs : la ruine et la pastorale. Chacun développe une sensibilité très personnelle à l?histoire et à l?anecdote, au minéral et au végétal, aux tonalités ocre et aux gammes de vert, qui se mêlent à un intense travail d?émulation. Une attention particulière est accordée à la manière dont les productions de Fragonard et de Robert se démarquent nettement de leurs contemporains grâce à l?accroissement de la dimension des tableaux. Ceux-ci atteignent des formats gigantesques qui favorisent l?immersion du spectateur dans une nature fantasmée. L?enjeu est de comprendre de quelle manière les ?uvres des deux artistes ont dominé le paysage artistique durant la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle en France.
