Giuseppe Santomaso è stato uno dei principali artisti astratti italiani. Ha partecipato a quasi tutte le Biennali di Venezia fra glia anni  1950 - 1986. Nel 1954 ottiene  il Primo Premio per la Pittura Italiana, nel 1956 il Premio Graziano dalla Galleria del Naviglio e nel 1958 il Premio Marzotto alla Mostra internazionale di pittura contemporanea di Valdagno. Nel 1943 e nel 1945 espone alla Quadriennale di Roma, mentre nel 1960 si tiene la sua personale allo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam.  Nel 1961 partecipazione alla Biennale di San Paolo. Una sua importante retrospettiva viene presentata nel 1965-66 al Kunstverein di Amburgo, alla Haus am Lutzowplatz di Berlino  ed al Museum am Ostwall di Dortmund. Dal 1957 al 1975 è stato docente di pittura all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. Al 1957 risale la sua prima mostra negli Stati Uniti, alla Grace Borgenicht Gallery. Durante il soggiorno americano incontra gli esponenti dell'Espressionismo astratto, corrente artistica che diverrà fondamentale per lo sviluppo della sua pittura. Book.

Il testo francese del volume è stato riprodotto dalla raccolta di poesie di Eluard "Les yeux fertiles" (G.L.M., Parigi 1936).
