Sanger was a barrister and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge who was most known for this essay, The Structure of Wuthering Heights. Before C. P. Sanger's 1926 essay, some critics had regarded Wuthering Heights as confused or poorly organized. In "The Structure of Wuthering Heights," Sanger approached the novel as a technical problem, reconstructing its chronology and genealogy and examining the English property and inheritance laws that shape Heathcliff's acquisition of the Earnshaw and Linton estates. His analysis helped establish that beneath the novel's apparently chaotic narrative lies a striking degree of structural and chronological precision, and it became an influential landmark in the critical study of Brontë's novel. The signature and date inside the front cover belong to Franklin Gary, an American literary scholar who attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and later taught English literature at Princeton University during the 1930s. He published academic work on Victorian literature and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1938. 1416696. Special Collections - Upstairs.…
