A frail boy who clung to the skirts of his German grandmother, Jules Jr. had to learn lessons of survival early. He was beaten up by his schoolmates and did not speak English well, but with his brother James he helped feed the family by hunting and trapping. Eventually he found the strength to stand up to his father.

Plon frères), (1847). - In-8, 271 x 180 : portrait, titre, 288 pp., 10 pl., 2 cartes, couverture illustrée. Demi-maroquin rouge à coins, filets dorés, dos à nerfs orné à la grotesque, tête dorée, non rogné, couverture conservée (De Samblancx-Weckesser). Édition originale. L'illustration, en premier tirage, se compose de 14 hors-texte, dont 12 gravés sur acier (portrait de l'auteur, titre gravé et 10 très belles reproductions de paysages et villes des bords du Rhin) et 2 cartes dressées et gravées par Tardieu (des bords du Rhin, de Coblentz à son embouchure, et de Constance à Coblentz). Les planches ont été gravées par Outhwaite, Nyon, De Villiers et T. Doherty d'après les compositions de Sandoz (pour le portrait), Chapuy, Champin et Jules Noël. Bel exemplaire, complet des deux plats de la couverture générale illustrée, très bien relié. Deux coins inférieurs légèrement abîmés.
