Whitcomb was an advocate of labor solidarity and a public school system. Inscribed in ink on the front wrap "by the au[thor]" (partially trimmed) to the Rev'd Mr. [Orestes] Brownson (of Canton). Brownson served as minister of the Unitarian Church in Canton, Mass. from 1834-36.

8vo, pp. 42; original printed tan front wrapper preserved, frontispiece and rear wrapper wanting; bound in library boards, ex-Harvard College Library (released) and with 2 or 3 small stamps; all else very good. "The advancement of civilization, by the cultivation of letters, science, and the arts, is to be held among the noblest objects of human exertion." Whitcomb (1792-1879) was a journalist and a champion of the working class, public schools and democratic political values. "He held several jobs and careers that included books, peddling, landowner, clerk, and journalist. It was his business of selling books' subscriptions that allowed him to travel the country extensively, giving him opportunities to purchase land at bargaining prices, gather a unique knowledge of the common US people, and to meet interesting and prominent people, including President Thomas Jefferson" (Wikipedia).
