Whitcomb was an advocate of labor solidarity and a public school system. Inscribed in ink on the front wrap "by the au[thor]" (partially trimmed) to the Rev'd Mr. [Orestes] Brownson (of Canton). Brownson served as minister of the Unitarian Church in Canton, Mass. from 1834-36.
