In half calf. Volume I contains ten black and white folding maps, with two missing, while Volume II contains five folding plates to the rear, and a colour folding chronological chart. Both volumes containing numerous in-text illustrations. The founder of Boy's Magazine, Beeton published many educative series including this encylopedic dictionary of knowledge, offering both the definitions and stories behind particular terms and figures as well how they are pronounced. Only a couple of years later, Beeton would published his wife's landmark cookbook. In half calf. Externally, minor fading patches to boards and rubbing to joints and edges, with the odd rubbing mark to spines. Bumping to the heads and tails of the spines, and to the extremities. Spotting to end papers. Minor wear to front end paper hinge of I. Internally, torn out illustrations table leaf to I and missing plates to I. Pages are mostly bright and clean, with minor age toning, and the odd spot to rear of plates to II. Good. Unknown (illustrator). book.

Samuel Orc…hart Beeton (1830-1877) was an English publisher, best known as the husband of Mrs Beeton (Isabella Mary Mayson) and publisher of "Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management." Beeton was the first British publisher of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in 1852, securing the rights from the then-unknown Harriet Beecher Stowe. He launched "The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine," a pioneering serial for middle-class women, the same year. His "Boy's Own Magazine," published in the UK from 1855 to 1890, was the first and most influential boys' magazine. After trying to fit all of his favorite poetry in to one "not unwieldly" volume, he published this two-volume set in 1871. . Edges mildly worn, corners lightly bumped, otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean. VERY GOOD. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

Whilst Beeton's name is normally associated with the success of his wife 'Mrs Beeton', or Isabella Mary Mayson and her incredibly popular work 'Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management', Samuel Beeton also wrote and published self-help textbooks and informative works, on topics such as Geography, Birds, Natural History and so forth. Containing entries on the following topics: Geography, History, Biography, Mythology, Bible Knowledge and Chronology. Complete in two volumes, with a 'table of chronology' to the rear of volume II. This copy is undated, dated using the preface to the front of volume I. Collates, complete with fourteen folding maps to volume I and six folding plates to the rear of volume II, one of which is coloured. In a half polished calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, bumped and rubbed to extremities and head and tail of spines. Leather cracked to spines and joints. Spine label to volume II lifting and slightly chipped. Joints starting but firm. Rear joint partially split to head, volume II. Hinges strained, with rear hinge volume II split and weak. Internally firmly bound. Pages age toned with the odd spot.
