In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Fair. Various (illustrator). An uncommon corrected edition of Samuel Johnson's ever impressive Lives of the Poets. A New Edition, Corrected. Complete in Three Volumes. Samuel Johnson's "major lives were quickly recognized as setting a new standard for English literary biography. In particular, the surveys of Cowley, Milton, Dryden, Swift, and Pope exemplify Johnson's serious concern with the deepest springs of creativity, as well as his ability to explore with considerable insight some individuals whose character and work aroused profound antipathy in him. Even in an age of greater theoretical sophistication, his reading of mainstream poetry from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries remains canonical, by reason of its attention to verbal detail, its decisive judgments, and its robust expression." (DNB) In calf binding with gilt detailing. Some wear to the extremities, including loss to the spine leather, with slight edge wear. The spine leather has been previously repaired. The boards are held by the cords only, and could possibly detach in the post even after careful packaging. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean with very slight browning with background foxing and the very occasional mark. Fair. book.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). A marvellous and scarce edition of this standard dictionary of the English language. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English poet, essayist, biographer and literary critic. He published 'A Dictionary of the English Language' in 1755, considered the foremost dictionary of the time until the Oxford English Dictionary was published 173 years later. It took him seven years to complete the dictionary, which he compiled alone. It cites authors such as Shakespeare, Milton and Dryden in its examples. This is a beautiful work in a lovely binding, containing a history on the origin of the English language as a prefix.Contains a bookplate to the front pastedown belonging to an Arthur Gardner with his family crest. In a full diced calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed, some fading and small loss to the leather, some rubbing to the spines, joint of vol I cracked about four inches. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Hinges slightly strained but firm. Internally generally firmly bound, pages a little age toned, some spotting heavier to the first and last pages.
