Despite the word "Pictures' in the title, this does not appear to have been an illustrated work, and the author has provided word pictures of key events. Chapter II, "Removal of the Seat of Government to Washington," was written by Mr. Wilhelmus Bryan. Samuel Busey was raised on a farm in Maryland in the Jacksonian period. He studied medicine and practiced in Washington. In 1853, he joined the faculty of the medical school at Georgetown University, where he had a distinguished career. He helped found or lead several medical associations, including the American Pediatric Society, the American Dermatological Association, and the American Medical Association. He was a prominent local in the nation's capital. Wilhelmus Bogart Bryan, former Washington newspaper man and graduate of Princeton in 1877. The preparation of this volume has been undertaken for the pleasure that employment brings, and the pleasure would have been greatly enhanced, but for the labor involved to correct the misstatements which have crept into the writings of some who essayed to make the history of the City of Washington a story of romance and fiction. Much other information has been collected from many previous publications and anonymous contributions to the local press, which has been so arranged as to bring together the data relating to special subjects, periods, and persons, so that the students of the early history of the Capital of the nation may find the groups of such facts and statements without much waste of time.
