The front & rear endpapers are soiled & there is an owner's ink name on the front endpaper. There is occasional soiling to the text & the front edges of a few overlapping pag…es are darkened. Good reading copy. Two nineteenth-century satiric pieces. The author of the mock-heroic "Dorriad" was anonymous. "The Great Slocum Dinner", according to the introduction, was by the authors listed above. These pieces relate to the "Dorr Rebellion", a brief armed uprising [1841-1842] in Rhode Island led by Thomas Wilson Dorr. The insurrection was precipitated by the increasing disenfranchisement of the citizens of Rhode Island, many of them recent Irish Catholic immigrants, who were unable to vote because of a requirement that voters own at least $134 of landed property.

S. Thompson from 1841 is on the title, The bookplate of "McClure Workingmen's Insitute" printed by the "True Republican" Rockville Ind. in 1857, and enumerating that Insitutes "Rules and Regulations" regarding books from its library, is found on the front pastedown.~~~Containing much "valuable information respecting the population and wealth of American (Sabin, 5956). We know that Jefferson had a copy, as two year later Blodget sent him an appendix of 4 leaves "chiefly respecting the Cotton manufactory" [www.founders.archives.gov/documents/Jefferson/99-01-02-79]. Blodget referred to corporations as "minor republics", and argued that commercial ties -- "incorporated monied commonwealth associations" -- transformed otherwise quarrelsome citizens into co-investors with shared interests [Economica, 20]. An important treatise on the economic theories of the young Republic. (Sabin, 5956; Howes, B 537).

In den WarenkorbFirst and only edition of one of the earliest systematic attempts to depict the entire American economy by means of statistical data. Tables are printed throughout, with accompanying essays that reveal Blodget to be a strong nationalist, a supporter of free trade, an abolitionist, and a promoter of paper money secured by land. B…lodget's view of the role of commerce in forging a republic is particularly notable, with the author arguing that joint stock companies bind people together in little commonwealths based on mutual benefit, which then act as an equipoise to the enormous anti-republican landed estates. Consequently, in Dorfman's summary of Blodget, "true friends of the republican course should therefore do all possible to extend the system of companies like banks, insurance, canals, with small shares to embrace the poorer classes" (Dorfman, p. 338). Provenance: John Hanson Thomas, with his bookplate to pastedown and ownership signature to title page, and his corrections to errata. Thomas (1813-1881) was a Maryland legislator imprisoned by Union forces from September 1861 to February 1862 for pro-Confederate sympathies.
