(Broughton published 4 Picturesque view in North Wales in 1798 - possibly the publication titled 6 Picturesque Views used some of the plates and text block from that edition?). (286*222). Housed in a grey cloth clamshell box, gilt titles to maroon calf label to upper cover. An excellent copy. (250*179 mm). (Similar to Abbey Life 90).

In modern grey oblong cloth covers, with photocopied title to top cover and spine. Internally new endpapers, title page has a 7.5" closed tear, also 3 small worn holes or stab sown holes, edges a little chipped, 14 pp, 4 pl, errata pasted in, some browning and light foxing to a few fore-edges, paper watermarked J Whatman 1794, plates dated June 12, 1798, with 3 of the original tissue guards, the plates are Fall of the River Machno, Conway Castle, Pulpit of Hugh Llwyd and Pont y Glynn, plates are 42*30.5 cm and the leaves are 66*49 cm, the poems that runs throughout is "REFLECTION", with its own cloth covered slipcase with its copies title, a very good copy of a rare and fragile suite of engravings with added romantic topographical verse and much scarcer than the enlarged but much smaller paper edition of 1801. Marked shelf wear and some soiling. Corners bumped and shredded. Board exposed at all corners. Wear to crown and tail of spine. Title at front board markedly rubbed. Scuffing at back board. First edition, oblong folio (28.6 x 45.6 cm); 24 hand-coloured lithographs, plate 13 just trimmed by the binder, shallow crease in the first plate, a few short marginal tears of which one repaired, faint stain in the top margin of the first few leaves; later red half morocco, spine gilt in compartments, sides with gilt double fillet, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed, boards spotted, light soiling), a very good copy. 'The coloured issue ranks as one of the rarest sporting books of the period. There is only a record of a second coloured copy, which is untraceable' (Schwerdt). Delineations. is the only book published by Samuel Alken, Henry Thomas Alken's brother; it was first issued in six monthly parts in wrappers (no copy known), and then in book form in two states: uncoloured on drab paper, as Mellon, or the more luxurious issue with coloured lithographs on white paper, as here. Schwerdt notes that the vigorous style of these plates made them eminently suitable for framing, and accounts in part for their rarity; 'twenty years' search has not enabled us to make up a complete set'. Later in the collection of Hugh Auchincloss, attorney and power broker, and stepfather to both Gore Vidal and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Not in the British Library; not in Abbey, Dixon, or Tooley. WorldCat locates just one copy, the Mellon copy, at Yale's Sterling Library; that one uncoloured and on grey paper.

In the left foreground on the floor, in front of a library step stool, is a pile of books. Another pile of books lies in the right foreground in front of a door with a glass panel and curtains in the top half.
