Pur alludendo visibilmente al genere cinematografico noir, Dead Man's Hand presenta una serie di fotografie ed ephemera ritrovati che fanno riferimento alla fascinazione dell'artista per la storia della fotografia della metà del XX secolo, in particolare la fotografia criminale e quella di pin-up. Le immagini sono finte, accuratamente realizzate come modelli in scala, poi illuminate e fotografate in studio. Per dare una sensazione di autenticità, l'artista ha fotografato i set da lui costruiti con una fotocamera vintage Speed Graflex, la stessa fotocamera 4x5 che veniva usata dai fotografi della stampa all'epoca. Le fotografie originali sono state poi alterate manualmente per apparire come foto reali. Il contenuto aggiuntivo del libro consiste in foto vere di pin-up e ritagli da riviste poliziesche d'epoca.
