It is not a history of science in Ancient Greece. As a physicist, I have been especially interested in the way the Greeks saw and interpreted the physical world around them. The texts I selected and translated in the course of my studies formed a frame into which these chapters were fitted as a kind of commentary or marginal note. To the scientist of to-day, Greek science as revealed by these sources presents a fascinating picture: on the one hand, there is a striking similarity between its patterns of thought and ours in all that concerns scientific associations and inferences, the construction of analogies and models, and the analysis of the epistemological background. On the other hand, while we attempt to transform the world into an abstract mathematical entity which transgresses the boundaries of the inorganic universe and infiltrates into biology and the realm of man, the Greeks saw the cosmos as a living organism, as a projection of man into the distances of the outer world. It is mainly for this reason that they were unable to visualize themselves in the Archimedean position outside the cosmos and to regard it as an object of analysis. This analysis (or dissection of nature, as Bacon called it) necessarily must proceed by unnatural methods such as systematic experimentation and mathematization of physical concepts. Thus the Greeks, while originating the scientific approach and thereby laying the foundation of our cosmos, were prevented, for a period of a thousand years, from making the rapid progress that came about in a few decades of the seventeenth century. From this time on, a picture of the cosmos evolved that must be set against the background of a civilization based on an interplay of science and technology, while the cosmos of the Greeks emerged from a world whose scientific curiosity remained untouched by any desire to conquer nature.
