Pages with some foxing and variabl…e tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Some cracking to gutters with exposed binding. Binding slightly loose. A previous owner's name to front free endpaper and a minor pencil inscription. Some page corners folded. Boards have moderate shelf wear with mild bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned. Some additional mild marks and liquid stains. Boards are slightly bowed. Textblock protrudes slightly from between boards due to the slightly loose binding. Spine is notably concave.

'In 1907 a people's movement t…o Christ among the Flowery Miao, a minority nationality reached the Chaotung area from its starting point in Anshun, Kweichow (Guizhou) Province, and Pollard became its most famed missionary leader. Until his death from typhoid, he established a center for the thousands of new believers in Shimenkan across the Kweichow provincial border, itinerated widely, planted churches, trained leaders, obtained justice for Miao Christians from officials and landlords, developed a unique script, known as the Pollard script, and used it when he translated the New Testament into the Miao language. He is remembered by Miao Christians as their spiritual ancestor' (Biographical Dictionary of Christian Missions). The Pollard script, loosely based on the Western letter alphabet is still in use.
