Paperback. Zustand: Gut. XIII, 294 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Einband weist minimal Randläsuren auf, sonst ein gutes Exemplar / binding has minimal edgewear, otherwise a good copy. - This is the standard translation of one of the greatest single works by one of Western sciences greatest single men, the Renaissance physicist Galileo Galilei. Written near the end of his life, the book had to be published abroad and led to Galileos condemnation. But he nevertheless considered it to be superior to everything else of mine published. Despite the fact that the book encompasses 30 years of highly original experimentation and theorizing on the part of this singular man, it is eminently readable. Written as a discussion between a master and two students, it sets forth its hundreds of experiments and summarizes the conclusions Galileo drew from those experiments in a brisk, direct style. Using helpful geometric demonstrations, Galileo discusses aspects of fracture of solid bodies, cohesion, leverage, the speed of light, sound, pendulums, falling bodies, projectiles, uniform motion, accelerated motion, and the strength of wires, rods and beams under different loadings and placements. Not only does the book display the genius of one of the makers of our civilization, but it also presents, for the historian of science, considerable information about Renaissance misapprehensions that Galileo refuted. / TABLE OF CONTENTS I First new science, treating of the resistance which solid bodies offer to fracture. First Day II Concerning the cause of cohesion. Second Day Ill Second new science, treating of motion [movimenti locali]. Third Day Uniform motion Naturally accelerated motion IV Violent motions. Projectiles. Fourth Day V appendix; theorems and demonstrations concerning the centers of gravity of solids. ISBN 9780486600994 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 342.…

This work, written during the last years of Galileo's life, incorporates the work that he had done much earlier and is a summary of his work on mechanics. This work is profusely illustrated with 126 in-text figures. Moderate soiling on binding. Gold lettering faded on spine. Lower corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout.
