Bound in half leather with marbled paper boards. Spine has black leather label with gilt titling and gilt fillets; has material loss to head, leaving headband attached by just its tip, a… tear to leather at tail exposing the quires below, joints completely split, being only held together by the two hemp sewing supports, and cracking and rubbing to leather throughout. Boards have bumping to fore corners exposing the boards beneath, and chipping, rubbing, and discoloration throughout the paper and leather; rear board has a dampstain to its bottom left corner that does not penetrate through to the rear endpaper. Text block has speckled edges with age-toning and dust soiling; has adhesive toning, toning, and foxing to front endpaper with red notation to front pastedown, and splitting to front hinge; penciling to title page, tear to top margin of pages 471-472, a large vertical tear to pages 473-474 (descends into text but text still legible,) a tear to front margin of pages 485-486, splitting to rear hinge, and toning and foxing throughout. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow. Originally established in 1820 by Dr. Nathaniel Chapman as the Philadelphia Journal of the Medical and Physical Sciences, physician Isaac Hays assumed leadership of the editorial board in 1827 and renamed it to The American Journal of the Medical Sciences. This first volume reflects his desire to expand the journal from a regional organ focused on Philadelphia to the premier national flagship journal for American medicine, providing a unified forum for medical research across the United States. 1415657.
