Boards in contemporary calf with gilt stamping and decoration to spine and speckled page edges. Boards rubbed and bumped at extremities with mild wear to corners and sections of spine head and tail missing, though no text loss; cracked at joints; scuffed and dust-soiled overall; pages gently foxed at margins with mild foxing inconsistently throughout. Previous owner pen to rear pastedown and ex-libris to first pastedown. A Very Good or better copy of a well-known history of the Roman Empire. Chippendale armorial bookplate of Plummer of Middlestead, likely of Andrew Plummer, who was the Sheriff-Deputy of Selkirkshire before his friend Sir Walter Scott took up the mantle after Plummer's death in 1799 and served until his own death in 1832. Plummer's father was a chemistry professor at the University of Edinburgh who completed his own studies at the University of Leiden, possibly where this volume was purchased.…
