Magennis was part of several operations involving X-Craft midget submarines in attacks on Axis ships. In July 1945, Magennis was serving on HMS XE3 during Operation Struggle. During an attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Singapore, Magennis showed extraordinary valour and bravery by leaving the submarine for a second time in order to free some explosive charges that had got caught, he is only person in naval history to exit a submarine in a diving suit, perform a military operation and return to the same submarine. His commanding officer, Lieutenant Ian Edward Fraser, was also awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the operation. Contains 224 pp with monochrome archive photographs throughout. In Fine condition, supplied in archive acetate film protection. SIGNED by the author to the title page 'To Chris Maccabe C.B. (Associate Political Director) with compliments from George Fleming' + souvenir 130th Anniversary of the Institution of the Victoria Cross cover DOUBLE SIGNED 'Ian Fraser V.C.' and James J. Hardcover in blue cloth, letterpress title piece on spine, spine faded, cloth a little worn but still nice and bright. viii, 119, [1]pp. London, Printed for the author and sold by Charles Frederick Cock, A handsome copy of this anonymous maritime poem, which borrows heavily from William Falconer's The Shipwreck, a fact the sailor-poet apologises for in the preface. One of the plates is an amusing depiction of sailor's "crossing the line". There is a second poem from pp.109-112 titles "The Exiled Convict" which was "composed on viewing a Convict Ship leaving the Land." Not in Sabin; not in Halkett and Lang.…

Just three months before she would be destroyed by bombardment while in service on the Tennessee & Cumberland Rivers. Letter from a sailor who is trying to get his Land Grant application to Wisconsin, but he can't raise the $11.00 application fee on his ship. In part: "I received the papers alright and I signed an affidavit before my Commanding Officer - and I signed them and sent them off but could not get $11.00 aboard of the boat. The Captain signed them also. Write to my wife and have her send the eleven dollars down to Menasha before the 20th of September. I was transferred from the 18th Wisconsin Infantry Co. into the United States Navy as I suppose they could get Soldiers easier than they could get Sailors. I think I can serve my country better here than I could in the land service as I have formerly been to sea and I am an able seaman at present." Fine condition.…
