Quarto. 10½'' x 8¾''. Contains (viii), 398 pp… with 7 full-page tissue-guarded copper plate engravings, each with leaf of explanatory text. A little staining from the leather turn-in's front and back, without any age toning to the paper beyond the original end papers and without any foxing to the text block. Lovely copy. This volume, along with other books of the period, came from the family estate of Sir Frederick Treves (15 February 1853 - 7 December 1923) a prominent British surgeon, and an expert in anatomy. Member of the P.B.F.A. MEDICINE & HEALTH.

Platt & Hall | New Boswell Court | Carey Street', with Halls signature ('B Hall' between two horizontal lines) at bottom left. The letter itself reads: 'Gentlemen/… | I have just received a letter from Mess: Prothero & Philipps who state that you will call here to know my intention respecting the Petition presented against my return. I have now determined on defending it & as I may probably be from home when you call I send this not to your office'. Hall oversaw the later stages of the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament, including the installation of the 13.8-tonne hour bell, "Big Ben", in the clock tower. He was a tall man and many attribute its name to him.

In den WarenkorbJerningham's entry in the Oxford DNB, states that he died unmarried, 'despite habitual flirtations with young actresses'; the present letter indicates that the members of the other sex were not exempted from his attentions. 2pp, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged, on a leaf of laid watermarked paper, folded for postage. Twenty…-six lines of text. Dated '1798' at top right, with 'From Edward Jerningham the Poet' above it. Unsigned, but in Jerningham's distinctive hand. Begins in near-Wildean tone: 'As I go to the new play, Reflection tells me it would be abusing of your goodness to dine with you to day, It would certainly be convenient, But you are much too young & handsome to be convenient, and so I will beg Leave to dine with you another time when I shall be able to enjoy the decious feast of your Reason and Drink the flow of your soul -'. The second half of the letter gives biographical details regarding Lady Stafford and her nephew's three sisters, two of whom became nuns: 'One of the nuns is still living, at her Death my Brother claims the Barony which devolves to Him thro' his mother who was niece to the late Earl of Stafford'.

Postscript: 'The M…ajr Genl: supposes Mr Ford is acquainted that The King leaves Windsor 17th next.' Ford the son of Queen Charlotte's physician, James Ford was clearly enquiring with regard to the king's itinerary for security purposes. According to his entry in the History of Parliament, 'In 1792 he was appointed magistrate of Shadwell police court. He was subsequently employed by the Home Office to collect information on radical agitators and manage French agents. [] At the time of his death he was acting magistrate for the Home Office.' See his entry, and those of Garth and Princess Sophia, in the Oxford DNB. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
